Breaking the nail biting habit.

Reasons for and how to stop nail biting

Breaking the nail biting habit. The habit that leaves nails looking horrible. I understand what happens to start the nail biting and how to make is less destructive but none the less it is a habit in which is bad for your health. I have some suggestions on how to stop it.

One of the main reasons for nail biting is nervousness, and lack of understanding. Another reason is because some people have the reflex to chew on their nails when they are bored. That is where the trouble starts, as soon as you find something that is not disruptive to do that gives you comfort you have started the habit. The habit needs to stop before it causes health issues. Such as infections under the nails, and cuts that happen when chewing on what is left of the nails.

One way to stop is by putting fake nails on. That way you can’t actually bite your nails, instead you get a bad plastic taste and you won’t want to destroy the good look that you have gotten by wearing the fake nails. Although, I don’t recommend that men go around and wear fake nails they might not like the comments that they get.

Another thing is to put lemon juice or tobasco sauce on the tips of your fingers, knowing that it’s there should deter you but if in chance sake that you forget, you’ll get a mean surprise. You’ll make yourself sick or need to do something else to make sure that you don’t go through the sour face of burning heat of the tobasco sauce.

Another way, which isn’t great for doing schoolwork, is to tape each finger. That way you can’t even get to the nail, and you won’t forget that your nails are off limits. And don’t take the tape off no matter how much you want to or you’ll be back at square one.

The last thing is to find out why you are biting you nails in the first place. If it’s because you’re bored don’t just write something or doodle, you’ll still have one hand free to chew on, do something that will take both hands. If you’re nervous about something then take deep breaths and make sure that you calm down. The last thing that you want to do is shake hands’ with someone with terrible looking hands.

Hey you're not the only one. It's like smoking. It's said that the more that you try to quit the better handle you get on quitting. ie. You have been quitting biting your nails and you can stop for about three months. What after three months drives you to bite your nails? For me it's that I stop caring about what my nails look like. I found that when I started to feel that way I would go in and get a manicure. A sure way to remind yourself that your nails are a part of you that deserve to look just as beautiful as the rest of yourself. Everytime that there is a relapse it's a question of what happened. When you know what happened then you can take that and learn what to watch for the next time around. Good luck. I at this point am 2 years and counting.

I have a very bad nail biting habit. I stop for about a day and then when im not thinking I will just go and bite my nails. When my hands sweat I bite my nails i don\'t know why. When I have to do something around people that involves my hands I try to hide my finger nails so nobody will notice and think I\'m nasty. This is very annoying to me and i cant find a way to stop...please reply with answers?

Matthew,

The best thing that I have read in your comment is that you know that you're doing it. After that first day of not biting your nails, make sure that you always have somehting on hand to fidget with that way your fingers won't find their way to your teeth. The better the fidget item the better. Making sure that it is also something that both hands can fidget with. The more that you realize what is making you bite your nails the easier that it'll get. The stressful situations or stress period would make you not even think about the fact that your biting your nails and you need to figure out what is making it hard. That way when you think about something then you can figure if you need to do something with your hands. And keep in mind that there will be a time that you want to hold that special someones hand and not want to worry about what your finger nails look like. Keeping that goal in mind you will have a better chance. Good Luck Matthew I know that you can do it.:)

I never found out why I was doing it :o, but I just stopped when I felt I was ready.
I was thinking about aesthetics and the fact that I had to hide my hands most of the time, and that it can really be repulsive to other people. Being female, it made it much harder. Today I'm pround of my nails and hands and really hope I will never do it again. I am much more self confident, especially when I get a compliment about nice hands. And I'm especially proud of kicking the habit. Give it a try and don't be rough on yourself if you don't succeed immediately, just keep on trying and think about freedom it will bring you once you make it.

I have been biting my nails ever since I was 8 or 9 I am now going on 23. I been trying and trying to stop biting my nails but seems to come back regarless if I wear fake nails I tend to bite them too and take them off even if they are pretty and I paid money for them. There are times that I do stop but once my hands go near my mouth bam there they go. I notice when I get nervous I bite them, and when am bored so i tried to entertain myself but still fall back into this bad addicting habbit.

I began to bite my nails as a 2nd grader, and now Im heading to the 10th grade. Im not embarrassed at all, its just annoying to have my fingers constantly in my mouth. For some reason, I just cant stop! People tell me "Well you're puttin a lot of bacteria in your body", and for some reason I dont care. When Im bored, I bite. Even when I'm doing something, I begin to bite without thinking about it. I just want to grow my nails so I can finally paint them. Ughhh, its so hard !!1

Ive been biting my nails ever since i can remeber and now im 19. If im not biting them i pick at them with the miniscule amounts of nail i have on my other fingers. I hate have short nails and constantly have to hide them from other people. It even makes eating a sandwhich hard because u cant hold on to it with out ppl noticing how horrible ur hands look. Currently having another go at quitting and find if i leave my self 1 finger on each hand to bite while my other nails grow and then once theyre grown i find i can occupy myself cleaning and filing them instead of biting them!
