Burning the Bridges Leading to Tomorrow

About pain, depression and self-harm.

Self harm, what exactly is it?  A lot of people have different ways of explaining it.  However, this is what self harm, or self injury, is to me.

First of all, let me tell you what self injury is not.   It is not tattoos, piercings or any type of body art.  It is not calling yourself a bad name when you do something wrong, or talking yourself down.  To some that may be self harmful, but that is not self injury.

With that said, what is self injury?  There are lots of different ways to self injure ones self.  Cutting and burning are the main  avenues of self injury.  I have been down both roads in my day, not something I am proud of but it is how I dealt with all the other crap in my life.

Why do people self injure?

There are many different reasons that a person may self mutilate themselves.  My reasons were anywhere from a way to punish myself, to it was a release from the emotional pain.  Some do it because they think it is cool, because they want to fit in.  No offense to anyone who injures themselves because of that, but to fit in is a really immature reason.

This article is not to condone self injury in any shape or form.  In fact my advice is do not get started down this path.  It can become an addiction like anything else.  I battled with it for over 7 years.  Even if it is not a suicide attempt, which usually it is not, it can lead to death.  You could lose too much blood, or cut in the wrong place and that is the end.

All in all it is your own choice what you do with your own body, I just hope this was able to inform those who have not started to never start, and maybe inspire those who do self injure to get help and to stop.  I have been there before, so if you need some help in stopping feel free to message me.
