Crystal Meth

Explains its uses, effects, and how the drug spread.

What is it?

Methylphenidate - over the counter-called Ritalin. Used for ADD and ADHD in children and sleeping disorders in adults, Also used for extreme obesity.

Crystal Meth- abuse drug made in illegal meth labs. Can be smoked, inhaled through nose, injected, or eaten. usually combined with cocaine or heroine which makes you high very fast and is very long-lasting but less intense feeling, this euphoria can last from 2-16 hours.

Effects

  • keeps you awake for hours or even days on end
  • appetite loss (this is why some teens use it)
  • anxiety
  • paranoia
  • hallucinations
  • acting violently
  • ability to be active sexually for hours on end (could lead to STD's)
  • if injected could get HIV from sharing needles

How is it made?

200 different substances that could be used 5-7 pounds of waste produced for each pound of meth manufactured

History of Meth-

  • First created in 1919 in Japan
  • Used on Japanese kamikaze pilot during WWII to make sure they don't change their mind in the middle of the flight
  • Used to keep truck drivers awake during long trips
  • Used for ADD, ADHD, and sleeping disorders

How it spread?

Once very big in the US gay community but now it's spreading fast into mainstream culture, this movement started in California where it started to replace heroin and cocaine because it was cheaper and very easily obtainable. It's now spreading from west to east very quickly.
