Facts About Smoking

The effects of smoking, how to quit, and much more.

Smoking a cigarette or a cigar would also become associated with the bohemian , someone who shunned the conservative middle class values and displayed his contempts for conservatism. But this was a pleasure that was to be confined to a male world; women smokers were associated with prostitution and was not considered an activity in which proper ladies should involve themselves. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Cigarette smoking causes 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. Smoking in the terrace is also still allowed.

Smoking also provides other side benefits which are real. These are some of the other reasons it's hard to stop. Smoking can dry your skin out and cause wrinkles. Some research even relates smoking to premature gray hair and hair loss. Smoking causes many types of cancer, which may not develop for years. But cancers account for only about half of the deaths linked to smoking.

Smoking is becoming an effective means for a nonsmoking parent to gain leverage in a divorce struggle. Courts have now recognized that parental smoking may be a deciding factor in custody disputes, and have issued orders prohibiting parental smoking in the presence of children. Smoking is a lifestyle. And the lifestyle of a smoker is very different than that of a non-smoker. Smoking harms not just the smoker, but also family members, coworkers, and others who breathe the smoker's cigarette smoke, called secondhand smoke or passive smoke. Among infants up to 18 months of age, secondhand smoke is associated with as many as 300,000 cases of bronchitis and pneumonia each year.

Smoking is still considered to be ‘cool' by many young people. Being cool is not about smoking but about being yourself and making your own decisions. Smoking is also linked to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and low-birth weight infants. Babies and children raised in a household where there is smoking have more ear infections, colds, bronchitis, and other lung and breathing problems than children from non-smoking families. Smoking becomes a part of who and what you are. It amazes me the number of people who smoke cigarettes who would never smoke a "marijuana"cigarette.

Smoking also increases the risk of preterm delivery (before 37 weeks of gestation) (5). Premature and low-birthweight babies face an increased risk of serious health problems during the newborn period, chronic lifelong disabilities (such as cerebral palsy , mental retardation and learning problems), and even death. Smoking during pregnancy has also been linked to preterm labor and other pregnancy complications. Smoking falls 2.5%-5% for every 10% increase in the price of cigarettes, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Smoking paralyzes the cilia that line your lungs. Cilia are little hairlike structures that move back and forth to sweep particles out of your lungs. Smoking is restricted or banned in almost all public places and cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise on TV, radio, and in many magazines. Smoking can also cause heart disease, stroke and chronic lung diseases like bronchitis and emphysema. Smokers are two to three times more likely to have a heart attack than non-smokers.

Smoking can also affect more than just your lungs. Smoking can increase your risk for heart attack, stroke, osteoporosis (thinning or weakening of your bones), and cancers other than lung cancer. Smoking among teenagers, however, has not declined since 1980. Approximately 90 percent of all smokers start before age 18; the average age for a new smoker is 13. Smoking is one of the worst things kids or adults can do to their bodies. Yet every single day about 4,000 kids between the ages 12 and 17 start smoking.

Smoking causes changes in your body and in the way you act. The changes in your body are caused by an addiction to nicotine. Smoking is an excellent way to preserve fish that you don't plan to eat right away. Fish is smoked as it dries over a smoldering fire.
