How Heroin Affects the Brain

Effects of heroin on brain.

Heroine is a White to dark brown colored powder or sometimes a tar-like substance and it is a drug. It is highly addictive opium. It is taken in many ways like by injecting through a vein, by injecting into a muscle, by smoking through a pipe, or by mixing with tobacco in a cigarette before smoking.

Heroin is the fastest of all the opiates. It reaches the brain within seconds of consuming it. More and more people are getting addicted to heroin now a days. Many of them start just to satisfy their curiosity but they slowly become addicts and couldn't stop taking heroin. Since it is highly addictive, even the people who know it is not good couldn't help their condition. It gives the body instant euphoric pleasure though is associated with long term bad effects.

The regular intake of heroin affects body in many ways. It causes nausea, vomiting, cramps in stomach, drowsiness, sedation, and many other minor problems. Long term usage results in collapsed veins, clogging of blood in veins which take blood to liver, lungs, and heart. This results in infection and sometimes it causes death.

Effects of Heroin on Brain

Heroin is so addictive that even the brain cells become dependent on this drug. In some people this addiction becomes so severe that they had to take it to maintain normal bodily functions of the body.

Since it is very fast in reaching brain, it reaches within a few seconds and is instantly converted to morphine and binds with the opioid receptors resulting in instant pleasure.

Though the exact brain mechanism is not understood properly, the intake of heroin directly affects brain. They stimulate brain and result is the pleasure people get by heroin intake.

People go to a drowsy state after using heroin and this continues for some hours.

Though it gives temporary pleasure, it causes depression throughout the day till a dose is taken again.

Due to this depression of the central nervous system, the mental functioning becomes uncertain.

People fail to make decisions because of the inappropriate mental functioning and fail to think clearly.

Because of it's effect on brain, people tend to stutter while speaking and they tend to speak slowly.

With long term usage of heroin, people will have very serious problems and the brain brain will be more vulnerable to any bad effects.

Within few hours of last dosage, the addicts feel irritated and depressed and anxious to have an other dosage.

Sometimes over doses results in mental disability and at the maximum it causes death.
