Forget the adverts that some drugs will help you quit this expensive but health-injurious habit. They have their limit and usefulness. There is another thing that will take you far and see you quit that habit that makes you feel less human in the eye of the public. To start with, I'll have you respond to this question. What is a habit? A habit is simply an addiction to any harmful substance or taste. Do you have a habit that makes you spend money even when you do not have money for any other thing even the money to feed with?
I use to smoke, a habit I picked up in my first year at the university. My parents were not there with me to monitor my lifestyle and dictate to me. At long last, I've got the freedom I have always yearned for. I started having pains in my joints some two months later. It became a situation whereby I crawl from one sickness to another. What I thought would make me belong has become my doom. It became very difficult to quit due to the influence of my peer group and their pressure. I knew they would mock me silly and say I'm such a sissy. I was only a seventeen-year-old boy and I smoke about a packet daily.
What did I do to quit this harmful habit? The first thing I did was to figure out how I ended up becoming a chain smoker. Another is to outline its hazards to my health. Another is to seek the opinion of non-smokers about my life. After these, I tried to find out if my life is worth being wasted on the altar of peer group pressure and their criticisms and on a harmful habit. Next is how to fight ferociously whenever the urge comes. Lastly, I asked myself if I could win this fight.
After being truthful and honest with the answers to my self-posed questions, I decided to face the bull.
Steps That I Took:
- I first realized I had a problem that must be solved and done with forever.
-
The next thing I did was to destroy my packets of cigarette where my pocket money goes.
-
I informed my friends and started teaching them how to quit without loosing their social status.
-
I stopped going to those places where I am easily exposed to the longing for the habit of smoking.
-
Whenever the urge comes, I pick up my toothbrush and brush my teeth, preferring the taste of toothpaste to that of cigarette.
-
Lastly, I prayed to God to see me through and He did.
A year later, my health improved tremendously. Two of my friends came to me asking for assistance and I guided them properly. Today, they are success stories too. My only regret was when one of them died while playing football after he was hit on the chest by the boot of an opponent. The autopsy showed a decaying and blackened heart. Thirteen years after, I still find the smell of cigarette very repulsive. I tell you, you can do it if you realize you have a problem. It is all about your will. If you will it in your heart to quit smoking, you are already halfway successful.
Have a cigarette-smoking free life and live a healthier life today.
