Quitting Smoking

Is strong will power an important part of smoking cessation?

One of the biggest lies smokers tell themselves is "I can smoke if I want" as if it's some great achievement in the battle for freedom. Surely if this were true then a smoker would be able not to smoke if they want and therefore give up. It's because the first statement is a lie that the second statement is beyond the will power of most smokers.

The term will power is used because most people are used to this phrase. It shouldn't be used when associated with smoking cessation for a good reason. Instantly "the smoker" attempts to class themselves as either week or strong. If they feel weak then they have already failed before they start.

Inside almost every smoker is a person who has wished at least once in their life that they didn't smoke. Inside that person is also the capability of fulfilling that wish. The ability to give up smoking is within every smoker.

Too much importance is placed on a person's will power when it comes to giving up smoking. A smoker does not need strong will power to quit the smoking habit. Many smokers have strong will power but this alone is not enough.

Smokers believe that it is hard to give up smoking because in many methods they are told this. There is an obvious problem here, if you continually tell someone that something is hard to do then that someone will start to believe it.

A method for giving up smoking should always claim to be easy even if the perception of the smoker is quite the reverse. Ask yourself one simple question; would you rather start a task that you are told is easy or start one that you are told is hard.

There are many things in life that are hard to do and many things that are beyond the abilities of the average person.

Quitting smoking isn't one of them.
