Should Smoking be Allowed in Public Places?

This is a controversial article against smoking in public areas.

Definitely Not!

That may sound harsh, but if one takes a look at what smoking does to others who choose not to smoke, the smoker will soon learn how selfish they are to be smoking in any public area.

It is true that some may enjoy smoking and even if it cost more money to continue the habit some would rather pay for their habit then eat food. Some like to smoke and claim to enjoy it and then later die of Cancer or Emphysema . Both are horrible sicknesses and a horrific way to die. And all for what purpose? To have a few moments of enjoyment for yourself and at the expense of others who do not smoke. How sad, because their selfish desire to smoke not only hurts their health but the health of others. And what about the smokers responsibility towards the harm he brings to others, even young children and babies?

Health magazine states: "82.4 per cent of smokers that were questioned, began smoking before they were 19 years old. Another study from this same Health magazine stated that one third of regular smokers had started smoking before they were 9 years old." To me that is so sad. These children later in their life would have loved to quit but could not, they were already hooked. They seem to have seen their adult parents smoke and wanted to appear grown up and started to desire to emulate the tough, sophisticated world of adults around them. So for those who feel their smoking is their own business, think again, your example affects others and even your children.

May lean toward the medical personnel for guidance on smoking. These medical professionals surly would tell us if smoking is bad for us. Yet if one is to go to New York City and go past the Sloan Catering Cancer Hospital, you will see all the Nurses and Doctors outside the front of the Hospital, smoking their cancer sticks and laughing and smiling as if every thing is just fine. What are the facts? Have hospitals banned smoking. Medical World News said: " Out of 7,200 hospitals in the United States, only 472 had made non-smoking areas, and 491 had banned cigarette sales. In fact, one hospital had reversed their decision because when they banned the cigarette sales their hospital gift shop sales declined." Sales I guess are more important then their patients health.

Many place today have already banned smoking in public places. Many smoker don't like that their smoking is being restricted. They feel that their freedom is being taken away from them. But like anything else smoking is an addiction. Drugs are an addiction and not allowed to be used freely. Knowing that smoking is an addiction to the nicotine in the cigarette, is it really fair or can this prohibition be justified? I personally feel that due to my research on this matter, I have to say that no one should be allowed to smoke in any public area. It is justified to ban it.

Please continue reading and see how smokers infringe on the health and well being of non-smokers. Smoking has caused many fires where people fall asleep and are smoking and before you know it the house is on fire, small loved children are dead, parents, grandparents and don't forget the tiny little family pet. Why? All for a moment of enjoyment on the part of the smoker.

What about the pollution is puts in the air we all share. Without the air that we all breath and share, we would die. What right does the smoker have to deprive me and my family from clean air to breath? In Michigan's Pontiac silver dome a study was taken of the air quality. There was such poor air quality that if this same study was on the air outside the dome, it would have been a cause for an air alert. Who was responsible, the over 80,000 fans inside the dome.

What many don't seem to realize is the effects of breathing the smoke filled air can be the same as if a person is smoking the cigarette themselves. The American Medical News quoting Dr. Charles F. Tate as saying: "There are studies now that if you sit in a room where smoking is going on, depending on the number of people smoking in the room and the size of the room, the non-smoker will be smoking the equivalent of one pack a day." The smoke from a cigarette is actually more harmful to the non-smoker because that one cigarette contains more tar and nicotine that gets into the air then if that smoke was inhaled while a person is smoking on the cigarette.
