Second hand smoke is a dangerous thing, the choice of an individual should be respected, yet it seems as though they are forgotten or overlooked by the smoker. At the bus stop if a smoker decides to light up a cigarette, they endanger the lives of people all around them, forcing them to move. It has been estimated that in the early 1980s in the United States, passive smoking was responsible for 35,000 to 40,000 deaths per year.
Smoking is incredibly addictive. The nicotine in cigarettes is what makes it so addicting, there is about 10mg of nicotine in a cigarette, and the average smoker inhales about 1 to 2 mg of it. 40 to 60 mg can be a lethal dosage for adult human beings. Smoking causes approximately 5 million deaths annually world wide.
Smoking can take control of the smoker forcing them to spend a huge amount of money on cigarettes; the average smoker spends over $1,500 a year on cigarettes alone.
Smoking sets a bad example for younger family members. Smoking in families introduces it into the children's lives and they get accustomed to it, and when they grow into their teens they can find ways to get cigarettes and start smoking themselves. This can pressure the teenager's peers and then a whole ring of students could start smoking from ONE family. The U.S. National Center for Health Statistics reported that in 1998, 24% of the population in the U.S. are smokers.
