Elderly Healthcare

Decisions when it comes to choosing healthcare for the elderly.

When we think about health care we can all be sure that in one point and time in our lives we will probably have to make a decision about the health care of an elder one we love. Of course it would be great if we could just take care of the elderly ourselves but it may come that point and time that they require medical attention 24 hours a day. After being a provider who cared for the elderly for many years I have researched some health care tips for you to consider before you make a choice you may regret later.

It is possible that you could hire a qualified Home Health Nurse that can come in to help take care of the needs of your elder. Through regular visits they can monitor their medical condition and under a physician can help maintain a routine that is specialized to fit that persons needs. With this option you can continue to help take care of the elder and be sure they are getting their needs met through a professional health care company. There are many different agencies to choose from. Interview potential companies who you may think will work with your situation. It's your choice to make a decision that will work for you and them.

Another possibility would be a Retirement home. Retirement homes differ from a nursing homes primarily in the level of medical care that is given. This is more of a multi-resident home for the elderly that gives them their own space kind of like a small efficiency apartment. They usually have a designated area for meals, gatherings, and health care. This would be for and elder who is still able to partially take care of themselves but just needs that extra care with nutrition and health care.

Then we have the Convalescent Centers or otherwise known as Nursing Homes. When choosing a nursing home for your elder it is important to choose one that will meet the needs that they have. There are different areas of health care that they should offer such as Intermediate, skilled and Alzheimer's. According to the level of health care needed be sure they offer that service. You would not want to put an Alzheimer's resident in a skilled unit, because this would not be the appropriate level of care needed. If you have an elder that has Alzheimer's you would want to make sure they had trained individuals certified in this area of expertise, along with a special unit they could be free to get their exercise.

You would also want to check the services they offer such as respiratory, speech, physical, and occupational therapy they have on the site. Do they offer Church services? Visit the centers you are considering and see if it has a home like setting. How do the other residents that live there appear? Do they have a activities dept? What about a certified dietitian? Do they have the qualified staff with a good Nurse to Resident ratio? These are all good questions to ask the Director of the center before making that final choice.

Never underestimate how important it is to find the right Health care for your elder. This may be the final days of their life and it should be top priority to find a Health Care Center that fits their needs in every way possible.
