Tired of the arguments of why or why not we need salt? Here are ten facts that should be available to everyone in making a choice with their health.
- The body needs salt to survive. 500 to 2,000 milligrams per day is the required dosage for our bodies to function correctly. Most people consume over 6,000 milligrams or more on a daily basis.
- Real salt (unrefined sea salt) contains sodium, chlorine, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, silicon, iodine, bromine, phosphorus and vanadium. Most of these minerals are found in multiple daily vitamins that we take.
- Refined table salt has been stripped of all minerals through processing and contains anticaking agents such as ferrocyanide, tricalcium phosphate, alumine-calcium silicate and sodium aluminosilicate. All of these agents prevent the salt from mixing with water, both inside the box and inside the human body.
- Salt stays in our body because of the inability to mix with fluids and therefore, be eliminated, triggering two of the major properties of sodium chloride; increasing hunger levels and decreasing bone density
- Only 7% of the salt manufactured goes for human consumption. The other 93% goes to industry such as explosives, chlorine gas, soda, fertilizers and plastics. Table salt is merely a "cheap" production overrun.
- Unrefined salt, in its natural state, is off-white or gray in color and clumps in the presence of moisture, making it not so pretty and hard to keep on grocer's shelves
- Refined salt is 97.5% sodium chloride and approximately 2.5% chemical additives. Unrefined salt is 84% sodium chloride and 16% minerals.
- Natural salt balances and replenishes all of the body's electrolytes. Refined salt upsets your fluid balance and constantly overburdens your elimination systems.
- Too high a concentration of salt in the body can lead to irritability, muscle twitching, seizures, brain damage, coma, and sometimes death
- The salt trade used to be more lucrative than money. The very word "salary" is derived from the Latin word "sal" because Romans often received their pay in salt.
