Healing Properties of Cinnamon

It was used by medieval physicians to treat coughing, hoarseness and sore throats.

This spice was used as currency, wars have been fought over it, it has aphrodisiacal powers and it has healing properties. This spice is so popular that even Moses used it in the bible. It’s cinnamon.

Cinnamon comes from the brown bark of the cinnamon tree and has long history as both a spice and a medicine. The cinnamon tree belongs to the Lauraceal family. ‘Cinnamon’ received its name from the Greek word Kinnamomon. Ceylon or true cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka which was formerly known as Ceylon.

There are three types of components in the essential oils of the bark that are what gives cinnamon healing properties. These components are cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate and cinnamyl alcohol. Cinnamon is a great source of manganese, fiber, iron and calcium.

Cinnamon has many healing properties. It was used by medieval physicians to treat coughing, hoarseness and sore throats. It can also be used to treat diarrhea and morning sickness because cinnamon is a carminative, which is an agent that helps break up intestinal gas.

Research shows that it can also lower cholesterol and help those with Type 2 Diabetes regulate blood sugar. It also has the ability to stop yeast infections that don’t respond to medications. Other conditions that Cinnamon may help treat include arthritis pain, memory function, Leukemia and Lymphoma. It also has an anti-clotting effect on the blood.
