How to Protect Your Hair Color From Fading

It's frustrating when you spend a fortune to color your hair and the color fades. Here are five important ways to preserve your hair color.

Whether you spent a small fortune having your hair colored at a local salon or dyed your hair yourself, you want to preserve your hair color. Unfortunately, the environment and repeated hair washing and styling can cause fading hair color or the development of an undesirable brassy shade. But all hope is not lost. There are simple steps you can take to help protect your hair color from fading or turning:

Choose your shampoo wisely

It's best to choose a shampoo designed to protect color treated hair. These can be found in the regular shampoo aisle of your drugstore or at your local hair salon. Avoid harsh shampoos that can strip your hair color over time. Thede include dandruff formulations and clarifying shampoos. Shampoo only as often as necessary as frequent washing particularly in hot water, can cause hair color to fade faster. It's also best to wait at least twenty four hours after coloring before shampooing your hair

Choose your conditioner wisely

Choose a conditioner formulated to protect hair color. These formulations are specifically designed to seal and protect color deposits. Plus, they give color treated hair a healthier appearance. Avoid the use of hot oil treatments as they can promote fading hair color.

Limit your exposure to sun and chlorine

Chlorinated pools can be a disaster for colored hair, particularly lighter shades of hair. Wear a bathing cap if at all possible. If you don't opt for a bathing cap, shampoo your hair thoroughly as soon as you get out of the pool If you can't shampoo, rinse as much chlorine from your hair as you can. If you'll be spending the day in the sun, wear a big straw hat to protect your hair. You'll also protect your face from the harmful rays of the sun. There are also a variety of leave-in hair conditioners that contain sunscreen to give you hair additional protection against direct sunlight.

Choose your styling products wisely

Avoid using styling products with alcohol if you want to preserve your hair color. Alcohol can promote fading hair color. Fortunately, there are a variety of alcohol free styling products available on the market. You may want to ask your hairdresser to recommend one.

Use color enhancing shampoos and conditioners

Color enhancing shampoos and conditioners will help to keep your colored hair vibrant and bright and will tone down any undesirable brassy tones. They can be purchased at your local drugstore or hair salon.
