Keep Curly Hair From Frizzing

It is very common to encounter frizz with curly hair due to the shape of the hair. Curly hair is coarser than straight hair, and has many loops in the structure. You will learn to avoid the unfortunate frizz that results from brushing, air drying, damage, and wind with curly hair.

Things YouÂ’'ll Need

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Brush or comb
  • Water
  • Towel

All hair care begins in the shower. Wash your hair thoroughly. It is best to use hot water to wash, as it opens up the cuticle of the hair to get rid of all the excess dirt and oils. When you rinse, it is best to rinse with warm water, so as to rid the cuticle of the shampoo, but not close the cuticle completely. Repeat shampooing as necessary until hair is clean. Apply an ample amount of conditioner to your hair and let it sit for one minute. Rinse with cold water, as this will close off the cuticle, and seal in the conditioner.

Do not rinse all of the conditioner out of your hair. You want to leave enough in the hair that it feels silky, but not slick. Once out of the shower, pat dry your hair. Do not rub your hair in between your hands and the towel, as this friction creates weak spots in the hair before brushing. Begin brushing or combing your hair from the ends up to the scalp. Work your way up, as the ends are not as strong as the root. You will avoid breakage that adds to frizz if you brush while the hair is still wet and pliable. Once you have brushed the entire head of hair, fluff the ends with your fingers so as to separate the curls.

If you have left enough conditioner in your hair, when it dries you will have no frizz at all. The thicker your conditioner is, the easier it is to leave a good amount on the hair while rinsing and the better conditioning qualities it will have. Thinner conditioners tend to run off the hair and not deposit enough conditioning qualities into the cuticle. This is not a guarantee that your frizz will never reoccur. Please consult your local beautician for more tips on defrizzing your hair.
