Position and proper latch on are the keys to breastfeeding successfully. Without it your baby may have a hard time getting enough milk. Here are the Top four breastfeeding positions that have worked for me. |
- Cradle hold; hold your baby's head in the crook of your arm on the side you would like to nurse on. Using your arm to pull the baby toward your breast. Cup your opposite hand to help him or her to latch on.
- Cross-Cradle hold; support your baby's head with the arm and hand of the opposite side you are nursing from. This position is perfect for smaller or premature babies.
- Football hold; Tuck your baby's legs underneath your arm so that they are behind you with him or her looking up at your nipple. With your hand on his head, pull your baby onto the breast. Perfect for twin breast feeding.
- Lying down; one of my personal favorites. Perfect for those long nights when you can barely keep your eyes open, let alone sit up and nurse. Lie on your side with your head on a pillow. Position your baby parallel to you, belly to belly. With his or her mouth toward your nipple. Gently guide them toward your nipple.
