Colds, the Myth, and How to Resist

Trust me, you don't catch a cold by going outside in cold weather without a sweater.

The common cold virus is something that affects a great many people throughout the world. Many people seem to think that cold air causes these colds. But is this really true? And what can you do to protect yourself from the common cold? In this article, I will discuss a popular myth about colds and how you can reduce your chances of catching a cold.

The Myth

Remember when your mom told you to bundle up, or the cold air will cause you to catch a cold? This is a common belief that has been around for a very long time. And no, it's not true. You do not catch colds from cold air, so feel free to replace that heavy jacket with a sweater. You'll be just fine.

Causes of colds

Okay, so what causes colds then? Well, there are several answers to this question. One of the main ways to catch a cold is by being around people who have colds. So if you're outside in the cold air then you don't have anything to worry about because no one is around you.

However, if you go inside and warm up with a group of friends then you may have a problem. If any of your friends have a cold then you are much more likely to catch it by simply being around them. Especially since you're all gathered close together over hot chocolate.

Other ways to catch colds are from improperly washing your hands, or by touching items that have been recently held by someone with a cold. So be sure and wash your hands more carefully to avoid these situations. Especially wash your hands before you eat or drink something. And it doesn't have to be antibacterial soap.

Antibacterial soap will kill a few more germs than normal soap. However, it's very unlikely to make that much of a difference. Antibacterial soap only needs to be used in hospitals; for everyday use, you can simply use normal soap. You'll be just fine. Here's some proof in case you don't believe me.

Fight Back Against Colds

Obviously, like I mentioned above, washing your hands and avoiding groups of people who may have colds will aid you greatly against cold germs. But is there anything else you can do? Sure there is. Try and keep fresh air circulating throughout your home. If you're not in your home then find a place that has a good supply of fresh air.

This is not always going to be possible, but it may help. The reason why fresh air is so important is because it is less likely to harbor cold germs. Since these cold germs are mainly spread via the air, it only makes since that avoiding the germ ridden air will lessen your chances of catching a cold.

As you can see, the causes of the common cold are fairly simple. Avoiding cold germs may prove to be difficult at times, but you should try to avoid them if possible. And remember to always wash your hands.

I enjoyed your article having come down with a pretty bad head cold three days ago. I home school, and close contact with my germy eleven-year-old ensured I was likely to get it. If I had only washed my hands more frequently I may not have ended up feeling like I was dragged behind a freight train for several yards.

Thanks for this informative preventative advice. Good wisdom.
