Diabetes and water

Water is, according to diabetes-specialists, important for everybody, but especially for diabetes-patients, because decrease of the hydration-level could cause serious health problems for diabetics.

Diabetes type 2, which largely is caused through lifestyle factors as obesity, physical inactivity and smoking, is almost an epidemic in the U.S.

The Harvard School of Public Health calculated that more than 21 million Americans at present time are living with the chronic disease; while yet another 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes. But even more worrying is the fact that diabetes type 2 nowadays is diagnosed with a growing number of children. Approximately 46% of the total cases of diabetes that have been diagnosed with children appear to be diabetes type 2.

One of the many health care concerns with diabetes type-2 patients is to stay hydrated. Water is, according to diabetes-specialists, important for everybody, but especially for diabetes-patients, because decrease of the hydration-level could cause serious health problems for diabetics.

With diabetes the body is no longer capable of processing sugar or glucose independently, from nutrition. That is because there isn’t enough or too little insulin being made by the body itself. Or the insulin cannot do its work properly. The insulin hormone is necessary for the transport of glucose from the blood to the body tissues. Next to glucose-problems there are often problems with the metabolism being out of balance.

If the glucose isn’t accepted by the body, it will release the glucose through the urine. For this procedure there’s water being used from the body and there is a risk of dehydration. So it is very important for diabetes-patients to keep their body hydrated.
