Vitamins are important for a healthy body. A fit person needs these to keep his body in top shape. More so for the sick. A dialysis patient, perhaps more than anyone else, requires a steady supply of vitamins. This is a need aggravated by the patient's loss of appetite, impaired intestinal absorption, and restrictions in food choices.
Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) and B6 (Pyridoxine)
Vitamin B1 is essential in releasing energy from carbohydrates which constitutes a significant percentage of every diet. It also maintains the nervous system. Vitamin B6 helps in the production of protein and red blood cells.
Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)
Together with folic acid, it helps in making new red blood cells.
Folic Acid
As stated above, it helps in creating red blood cells and is also important in reducing homocysteine levels, a major factor for cardiovascular death.
Vitamin C
It is a major antioxidant. It helps in the manufacturing of collagen for wound healing and proper absorption of iron. It also keeps the blood vessels and capillary walls healthy.
Vitamin E (Tocopherol)
In a certain study it was shown that alpha-tocopherol decreases cardiovascular composite index compared to placebos among dialysis patients by 50%. Although a side-effect that was noted is bleeding among patients who are taking blood thinners. It is therefore advised to take extra precaution when considering on taking this vitamin.
