Living with Diabetes

You can live well with diabetes if you change your life style, and follow all your doctors, and nutritionist's rules.

Many people have diabetes and don't know it. If you have diabetes in you family, or if you are overweight, you should ask you doctor to check you for diabetes. You should be tested every two years, even if you have no reason to believe you will get diabetes. Anyone can come down with it at any time.

  1. The best thing you can do if you are diagnosed is exercise,

take your medication, and follow your diet plan. You will receive a diet plan from a nutritionist, if there is anything you don't understand have her explain it to you. Five small meals might serve you better than three larger ones. The size of your serving's makes all the difference so count those carbs.
  2. Counting your carbohydrates is very important.

Read all labels on prepared foods, and look up carb counts for all the foods you prepare yourself. You will normally be allowed to have from 150 carbs per day to 200. Count your carbs for every meal, and use splenda instead of sugar.
  3. Watch your fats, cut out animal fat,

and use olive oil instead. Use fat free milk, and cheese.
  4. Use few potatoes, pasta's, and other starches.

They are all high in carbs.
  5. Most vegetables are low in carbs

so fill your plate with these; add a small serving of starch and protein.
  6. Your doctor should check you're AIC every six months.

5 is an excellent number but anything below 7 is acceptable.
  7. If you are overweight...

... losing weight will improve your condition.
  8. Pay close attention to your feet.

Dry between your toes carefully after your bath. Keep your toenails trimmed. If you have a sore place on your foot, see your doctor right away.
  9. Have your eyes checked often.

Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness.
  10. If you are on insulin, check your sugar often.

You will get a chart from your doctor's office with full instructions.

You can live well with diabetes if you make these changes in your life style. It's up to you to take control. Your doctor can make suggestions but you have to follow through. It's all up to you.

Thanks for the informative article. Diabetes is indeed insidious-and the consequences of untreated diabetes are tragic. It's all avoidable if diabetes is diagnosed and kept under control.

This is clearly laid out and informative. Diabetes seems to strike at any age. I know a child who has it.

Thank you for dropping by and leaving your comments. I do know about diabetes, my partner has it. I prepare most of his meals, and nag him about his carb count.

it is an insidiour disease. I take insulin five times a day, and sometimes more. I am doing all right now but I had to learn, and its not easy.
