What is it?
Magnesium malabsorption is a rare illness that afflicts a few percent of the worlds population. It´s not commonly known but easy to treat.
Symptoms
The symptoms include:
Cramps, tiredness, constant pondering, back pain, strong exhaustibility, extreme sleep requirement, short involuntary movement of limbs, cold feet, agitation, problems concentrating, difficulties finishing a task
Magnesium malabsorption is not magnesium deficiency
A blood test (blood picture, hemogram) is necessary to make sure that magnesium deficiency is not the problem. Patients with magnesium malabsorption have a normal level of magnesium in their blood. Due to a genetic factor the magnesium in the blood doesn´t correctly reach the cells of the organs (and is not correctly stored there), this leads to symptoms similar to magnesium deficiency.
What to do about it
After any other possible causes for the symptoms have been ruled out, treatment can begin. It´s necessary to supplement additional magnesium. Supplements are available as pills, liquid or powder.
Finding the right dosage
Some experimentation is needed to find the right personal dosage. Dosages commonly vary between 200 mg and 1000 mg. I use 800 mg per day. (400 mg in the morning, 400 mg in the evening). Start with 200 mg (split) and increase the dosage by 100 mg every following day until you get diarrhea, then use your previous dosage.
Example:
You get diarrhea at a dosage of 400 mg. The dosage you should use is 300 mg.
The necessary dosage may vary over time (caused by hot weather, stress etc.). Consider changing the dosage if symptoms reappear.
