Natural Remedies for Ulcerative Colitis

In today's modern world, many of those living in urban areas or in an industrialized country are more likely to develop ulcerative colitis.

People living in the northern climates also seem to have a greater risk of developing ulcerative colitis.

Other environmental factors that may contribute to the onset of this disease, such as diet high in fats or refined foods, may also play a role.

Some of the many symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis are as follows:

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Rectal Bleeding
  • Bloody Diarrhea
  • Feeling of Urgency
  • Weight Loss
  • Abdominal Cramping and Pain
  • Inability to have a bowel movement despite the urge to do so.

Note: Symptoms may also manifest them self out side the gut and also include joint pain, eye inflammation, skin rashes, lesions and mouth ulcers.

I have been able to come up with at least nine Natural Remedies that may help with this ongoing disease. However, I would also say that one must always consult with their family doctor or Specialist before starting any new regiment or treatment.

  1. Probiotics

Dietary supplements containing bacteria or yeast. Example: Yogurt, cottage cheese etc.
  2. Omega - 3 Fatty Acids

  3. Oral Aloe Vera Gel

  4. Boswellia

There has not been any major side effects reported concerning the use of Boswella Extract.
  5. Diet

  6. Folic Acid

This is a “ B ” vitamin that helps regenerate and rebuild new cells in the human body. Women should take in 400 mcg daily. You can get this in the vitamin brought over the counter. Some foods that also contain Folic Acid = Broccoli, Asparagus, Bananas, Oranges, Pea, Nuts, Spaghetti, bread, cereal and flour. Note: Food labels may say folic acid or folate, meaning the same thing.
  7. Acupuncture

  8. Bromelain (Pineapple) Extract

  9. Mind-Body Therapies

    Biofeedback, hypnosis and meditation.
  10. Reduce Stress

In my ongoing research I have come to the conclusion that stress is responsible for many of the diseases found in the world today. Stress causes chemical imbalances in the body that often contribute to the onset of many illnesses.

Diet

There's been no firm evidence that what you eat causes inflammatory bowel disease, but certain foods and beverages can aggravate your symptoms.

  • Limit your dairy products
  • Experiment with fiber
  • Avoid problem foods
  • Eat small meals
  • Always ask about vitamins. With ulcerative colitis it can interfere with your ability to absorb nutrients. So you may need vitamins and minerals supplements.
  • Always drink lots of Liquids. Water is the best. Stay away from Alcohol and caffeine beverages stimulate your intestines and will make the diarrhea worse.

The Role of Omega-3: Antioxidant Support

Dosages in humans would be equivalent to around 90 mg of quartering daily. A diet with a 4.5 to 1 ratio of Omega-3 to Omega 6.

Check with your doctor - This has a drug interaction with antibiotic (Quercetin binds bacterial DNA).

Quercitrin is found in citrus fruits, buckwheat and onions.

Some foods that are Rich in Quercetin include: caspers, lovage, apples, red grapes, tea (Camellia Sinensis), citrus fruits, broccoli, leafy green vegetables, cherries and a number of berries; including raspberry, bog whortle berry, lingon berry, cranberry, choke berry, sweat rouan, rowanberry, sea buckthorn berry, crowberry and prickly pear cactus.

Organically grown tomatoes have 70 % more quartering than conventionally grown honey, eucalyptus and tea tree flowers.

Ulcerative Colitis Cure & Care

  • Don't forget the fish oil
  • Help reduce inflammation and prevent relapses by taking a daily supplement delivering 5.4 grams of omega-3 fatty acids
  • Drink aloe juice
  • Improve your symptoms, and your chances for remission, by drinking 100 ml of an Aloe vera herbal extract twice a day
  • Try herbal boswellia
  • Reduce severity and encourage remission by taking 550 mg of boswellia gum resin three times a day
  • Watch what you eat
  • Forego fast food and other sources of excessive animal fats, margarine, and sugars to reduce risk
  • Protect yourself from a related disease
  • Reduce your risks of developing UC-related colon cancer by avoiding alcohol and taking a daily folic acid supplement
  • Check up on nutrition
  • Visit a qualified health professional regularly to detect and treat nutritional deficiencies caused by colitis

One last observation that I have observed is that often those that are suffering from diseases such as Ulcerative Colitis and many other disabilitating illnesses often inherit what they feel are uncommon fears.

Some become afraid to even leave their homes in fear that a flare up may occur and soon they will not want to step outside their homes.

Just an observation, group therapy will help those suffering and having a safety net such as a phone call between groups members, as to calm the person should a panic attack occur while out and about may be helpful.

Well written with great information. I am trying several of these things as soon as I clear it with my dr. As a person who deals with UC everyday I can tell you that diet thing is soooooo important. I found that most people do not get diagnosed with UC early because of denial and shame. UC is one of those illnesses that can take over your entire life if you are not watching and proactive. I wasnt, not really, I did research and then did nothing about it, kind of like a hampster on wheel, I was going really fast and yet no where at all. It takes courage to step off the hampster wheel and start moving on solid ground. In part due to not knowing what you will find and in part due to this makes it all real. Those first steps in this are tough ones but there are people who can help if we let them. You are right about the group therapy thing that would have been so beneficial to me as that is exactly what happened to me and my very real and founded fear of leaving my house because I would have a UC attack in public developed into an unnatural fear of leaving my home for other reasons. The depression that goes with this disease is major and clinical and can take all kinds of twists and turns, but if you are a caregiver or family member of someone with UC the most important thing for you to know is that depression in someone with UC often is deadly. We figure out how you would be better off without us.

If I were going to offer the UC sufferer one piece of advice it would be to keep a food journal. Here is what I did, I knew that I did fine with rice as most people do. I took my diet all the way down to cooked rice and water for a week. And I wrote every night about how my UC was acting. You can also tell a lot more about the meds you are on at this point. People might say I could not eat just rice for a week. When you have UC you develop a love/hate relationship with food. I used to love love love food, now food just keeps me going. When you start the journal write about what happened to you that day and how you felt about it. As you add back each food, one food every few days you will know instantly what doesnt work for you. However, eating to much at one sitting is always going to be a problem even with rice. My gastrogirl(yes I have made her into a superhero) says I am better off with 6 or even 12 way smaller meals a day than 3 large ones or like I was trying to do it and just eat one meal a day...stupid. But if you write about it all comes out in the journal and then take that journal to your gastro superhero and let them figure it out.

Oh my I have about written an article in your comment section..so sorry about that dear. This is a really great article with much needed information that no one really wants to talk about, not even those of us suffering with this disorder. Thank you Quail for bringing this subject out into the light to lose some of the shame that surrounds it.

Namaste young one and dear friend Crystal; it was my pleasure to write the article and if it helps you in some small way as I hoped it would, then spirit has served us all well and I give thanks to spirit for its guidance. Aho = Amen.

Also you my friend need to write a article about keeping a journal as this will help many. You live with this illment everyday and now you as well can help another. Smiles are free and love of a true friend is timeless. Mike
