Physiology of a Backache

The causes and treatments of the common backache.

A backache is something that everyone will experience at sometime in their lives. They can be so painful that nothing seems to relieve them. Luckily, most backaches are minor and have no residual effects after it subsides. However they can be a warning sign of something more sinister. Generally a backache with no other symptoms can almost be considered a normal part of living. Knowing a few things about what to look for can help you differentiate between a normal back pain and something for which you should seek medical attention. It also helps to know a few facts about common backaches that can help alleviate them.

  • Fever. A backache that is accompanied by fever is a sign that it is not a common backache. Seek medical attention if fever is present.
  • Burning during urination or the inability to urinate is cause to seek medical attention.
  • Nausea or vomiting is also cause to seek medical attention. Reoccurring nocturnal back pain is not normal. A backache that doesn't go away within a reasonable time should be checked out so should a backache that keeps worsening with no sign of letting up. And of course if some kind of trauma is involved.

If the backache does not present with any of the above symptoms then chances are good that it is just a common backache. A backache can be caused by one of many things. They can be caused by soft tissue spasms, such as muscle, tendons and ligaments or they can be caused by nerve impingement by hard structures such as bone. Left to itself the common backache will subside in a few days. However there are some things that can be done to help a common backache subside a little quicker. Contrary to popular beliefs bed rest does not get rid of a common backache any quicker. It could actually aggravate it and make it last longer. Muscle stress and strain is probably the most common cause. Repetitive or strenuous activity that a person is not used to can cause a backache. As will weak abdominal muscles. If there is a "Potbelly" then the best thing a person can do is reduce the fat in the abdominal region.

Strengthening the stomach muscles will cause less strain on the lower back muscles by supporting the extra strain fat puts on them. Situps and crunches are perfect for that. This type of activity is preventive more than curative However, the lack of back pain will be very noticeable after a few weeks of exercise. Inactivity is causative for low back pain. Such as laying in bed hours longer than normal. The remedy for that should be self evident. Dehydration will make your back hurt. Keeping hydrated not only helps end backaches but it also prevents many maladies. After all the human body is 80 percent water. When things start to dry out its like a car running out of oil and grease. It doesn't work correctly.

When someone is experiencing a backache they will be the last to say its common, But unless it is accompanied by other symptoms it is a very good chance it is. With a little preventive exercise, and paying attention to what your body is trying to tell you, you can minimize the misery that you have to suffer.
