Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by persistent defects in the perception or the expression of reality.

A person with this condition has disorganized thinking and may experience hallucinations or delusions. This can affect their behavior and/or feelings and emotions. Schizophrenia is a physical disease or illness of the brain. When Schizophrenia occurs, a person is thinking, feeling and behaving in an unfamiliar way, this leads to hallucinations, delusions or irregular thinking. A delusion is a false or unreal belief. A hallucination is when the person with this illness believes that their delusion is real and they respond it by speaking or acting as if it were real. A person with Schizophrenia has very strong emotions, if they feel happy, they will smile or laugh, and if they feel sad or depressed, they might cry or frown, it usually just goes one way or the other.

There are many symptoms that go along with Schizophrenia. A period of time, with severe depression occurring to a person, is one of the first symptoms of Schizophrenia. Substance abuse is also very common before the first psychotic experience. Another common symptom is their behavior becomes very disorganized and indifferent.

Another symptom could be that they are not behaving the way they should be, such as loss of movement, loss of speech and strong emotions. Depression and mood swings play a big part in most of the symptoms dealing with Schizophrenia.

The causes of Schizophrenia are believed in a couple different theories. One theory of Schizophrenia is the Genetic Theory, which is passed down from generation to generation. Another theory of Schizophrenia is the Interpersonal Theory, which is dealing with the stress of their own lives and their families. The third theory is called the Biochemical Theory, which occurs when the human body is acting with abnormality of thinking, feeling and living. The last theory of Schizophrenia is known, as the Bio-Psycho-Social Theory, which is believed that it is caused by all of the theories above.

There are a many different cases of this disease. The ones listed are the most common.

Catatonic schizophrenia is when a person with this disease may not have full control of their body movements or positions. If someone moved their body part in a certain position they might not react to it and keep it the same way and remain it in the same way. The person also might slow down or stop, or the person might stand and sit repeatedly. A person with this illness could be very energetic and would not stay calm and still or the person might be moving at all times. Another reaction of Catatonic Schizophrenia is the person could be very mellow and difficult or unable to move.

Another type of Schizophrenia is Disorganized Schizophrenia, which is when a person with this condition has very disorganized or clueless behavior and/or activity. They show different behavior by indifferent facial expressions or body movements, avoiding other people completely or complaining about their health repeatedly.

The last type of Schezophrenia, which is being talked about, is Paranoid-Type Schizophrenia, which is when a person with this illness is communicating with a person that is not visible, the people with this disease just think that it they are there and they talk to this “invisible” person. A person with this disease gets angry and offensive or even sometimes, violent. People with this disease are watched over very carefully and usually have someone they know beside them. These people also feel like there is “something or someone after them”; they are always worried about this “thing” hurting them. When this happens, the ill get very nervous and worried. People with this type of disorder feel they are in their own world and nothing else exists.

Schizophrenia can be treated but cannot be cured.

One treatment used to help Schizophrenia is Electro Convulsive Therapy, which is when a low-voltage electric current is passed through the brain, which leads to a small “shock”. This person is put to sleep when this happens but they do not feel pain. Researchers aren't sure of what this does but they know that it relieves some of the symptoms of schizophrenia.

Another treatment is psychosurgery, which can help the delusions, and/or hallucinations decrease. This surgery was done for very serious cases after other treatments didn't serve the purpose.

Schizophrenia is difficult, scary and very exhausting. Some people with this disease, have a period in there lifetime when there symptoms completely stop and do not have to deal with this illness any longer.

People with this condition cannot control the way they feel. “Normal” people, without this disease can act a different way about their feelings. For example, a “normal” person could be having a horrible time and would be able to act like everything is OK. But people with this disorder always seem to be sad and have mixed feelings, they don't know how they are feeling or how to feel, so whatever feelings come first, appear with the persons behavior. Also people with this disease may take things very seriously, such as moral and religious topics. A person with this disease might picture the wrong thing about the bible and be scared to believe what they want to believe.

Another feeling of a schizophrenic is very lonely and empty. Because of this they feel they are not human on the inside and from the outside they feel/look the same way. They think of themselves of a worthless, bad or unimportant person.
