Sciatica is a major pain in the back. But, it's more than just a minor inconvenience; it's the cause of 33% of all workers compensation costs paid out every year. Anybody who suffers with this condition knows how debilitating it is, and assumes they must just suffer through it. However, there are treatments that can help alleviate their suffering. But, before one can get help, they must first know whether or not sciatica is the cause of their pain.

Back pain is wide ranging. The cause for a nagging and persistent ache can run the gamut from a serious problem that may need surgical correction to a condition which can be treated with simple home remedies and over-the-counter medication. So, before one diagnosis themselves, they should first check the symptoms of sciatica to see if they match their own.

Sciatica Symptoms

•  Pain which may start in the lower spine. It can than creep down to the buttocks and on to the back of the leg. There can also be discomfort and pain anywhere along the nerve pathway
•  Tingling or a pins and needles feeling
•  A loss of bladder or bowel control. Be advised, if this happens it is a sign of a rare but serious condition called Cauda Equina Syndrome. Although it is rare, it should not be taken lightly. If these symptoms occur it is important to seek immediate medical attention.

If one experiences one or some of these symptoms and believes they are suffering with Sciatica there are some helpful and easy treatments they can try.

One of the first things to keep in mind is that prolonged bed rest can actually do more harm than good. However, if the pain is unbearable it is ok to give your back a day or two to begin to heal.

•  Hot packs-after 48 hours, apply heat. If the pain continues alternate warm and cold
•  Stretching-avoid jerking, bouncing or twisting
•  Regular exercise-this is a great way to combat chronic pain and discomfort

Along with these, there are some complementary and alternative treatments that one can explore as well. These alternative treatments can be used in conjunction with the traditional methods or by themselves.
