Skin Cancer: Understanding the Facts and Eliminating the Risks

What skin cancer is, what your risks are, how to reduce the risks, and other interesting facts.

Especially if you live in a country where there are few hot and sunny days, it can be tempting to dive in the closet, grab a blanket, and lie out in the garden if there is even a moderate chance of a suntan. However, this behavior can be extremely dangerous if you don't give the sun the respect it deserves. One of the most surprising facts about skin cancer is that you cannot see the effects of sun damage right away. In fact, the tanning you do today can cause skin cancer ten or even twenty years from now. It is true that children and people with fairer skin are predisposed to skin cancer, but it doesn't discriminate, anyone can contract it.

There are several types of skin cancer, basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma, or which the latter is the most dangerous. Basal cell and squamous cell cancer are the most common, and anyone who has experienced bad sunburn in their lifetime is at risk. Obviously, the usual places for abnormalities to occur are parts of the body which have had the most exposure to the sun. Hands, arms, legs, and the trunk of the body are most at risk.

It can be difficult to detect skin cancer by yourself without knowing your body thoroughly, but one of the signs is some kind of change to the skin. Often, a new mole might appear, or an existing mole may enlarge and become discolored. On occasion, there may be a slight lump which may or may not be reddish brown in color. If you experience any of these symptoms you must seek medical attention. Skin cancer is easily treatable if caught in its early stages.

The really great news is that almost all types of skin cancer are preventable. You should avoid direct exposure to the sun at the hottest part of the day (11am - 3pm). More importantly, even on a cloudy day, slaver yourself every two hours in good quality sunscreen of at least SPF-15 if you must go outside. A good option for children is to buy long sleeved quick-dry swimwear which will offer additional protection. This may not be what you wore when you were young, but remember the UV rays from the sun are forever becoming stronger and more dangerous. Hats which cover the face and the nape of the neck offer excellent protection both from skin cancer, and also sunstroke.

Skin cancer is preventable but treatable if caught early. Take precautions, examine your body regularly, and enjoy the sun safely.
