Tanning Beds and Skin Cancer

The ways tanning beds can lead to skin cancer.

Tanning beds are a cancer risk. Last year 28,000,000 people in the U.S. used indoor tanning and a study done by scientists in Sweden found that 18-30 year old who went to a tanning salon at least 10 times had 7 times greater a chance of developing Melanoma. And in another study people with 10 sessions in one year had an increase in a protein used in skin repair that people usually get when their skin is sun damaged. This shows that tanning indoor can be just as bad as the UV rays from the sun if not worse.

There are 3 kinds of UV rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVB are the ones that can cause sunburn and eye problems. UVB rays can cause premature aging, more than one type of cancer, immune system problems and cataracts. SPF factors in sunscreens are how long you can stay in the sun before you burn. So, if you start to burn in 30 min and it is SPF 15 then you would have 450 min or 7 and ½ hrs. before you burn.
