Many people suffer from migraines. People of all ages suffer from migraines. Migraine headaches are common in teenagers but they are substantially under-treated, concludes a study of nearly 19,000 12 to 19-year-old. About 60 percent of migraine sufferers used only over-the-counter drugs to treat their symptoms, 17 percent used prescription medications and 22 percent used both over-the-counter and prescription drugs.
Medical experts believe that migraines may be caused by a chemical or electrical problem in certain parts of the brain. Migraines affect both sexes but are common in women than in men. Children also suffer from migraines. However, their migraines last for a shorter period. There are some triggers of migraines. Certain medications can cause migraines. A lack of magnesium can cause migraines, too.
To reduce the number and severity of migraines, one must make some changes to one's lifestyle. It is good to avoid food that can trigger migraines. Identify them and avoid taking the food.
If certain scents are giving you the problem, stop using them. Some people are so sensitive to different scents that the smell can trigger a headache that can lead to a migraine.
Quit smoking. Smoking is a common culprit that makes one's migraine worse. Many people who suffer migraines do not realize that smoking is bad for their health.
Exercise regularly. Regular exercise reduces the tension in the body. It helps to prevent migraines from attacking an individual because during an exercise, the heart pumps a lot of oxygen to the organs. Walking, swimming and cycling are good forms of exercise for the body to release tension.
Overexerting oneself can cause an attack of migraine. Too much physical exertion may provoke a migraine. Intense period of hard work like beating deadlines or conflicts at work can also lead to migraines, too. So, you should learn to relax. Spend at least half an hour to unwind. You can listen to soft music, pick up a hobby or just meditate. Taking a warm bath would be good to relax too.
Get enough sleep. Changes in sleep patterns can initiate an attack. Sleep at a regular time and have enough of sleep. Too much sleep, too little or interrupted sleep can trigger a migraine.
And you are right, children do get them. I have a granddaughter who suffers badly from them. I tried to get her to keep a food diary. Unfortunately they are inherited.
