Thinner Than Thin

Some insight behind the factors leading to and accompanying anorexia.

Why do thin young ladies want to go thinner is beyond me. Sometimes I think that they don't see what I do and sometimes I think that they have been too affected by the media and advertising on the advantages of having a slimmer figure.

Loosing weight until you are skin and bones has never been healthy and there are some industries that have encouraged becoming that thin, over the past decades. That has happened parallel to the plethora of quick weight diet regimes and advertisements that tease teenagers into losing more weight then they should. Here is some insight on factors leading to excessive dieting and anorexia.

  1. Researchers have surmised that girls who have idolized their Barbie dolls are more likely to opt for excessive dieting regimes when they hit adolescence. The toy market is countering this by developing dolls that have a more realistic proportion and cease to exaggerate thin waists and narrow hips.
  2. It is well known that women who opt for being thinner, suffer from a condition where they imagine themselves as being overweight. It is as if they see a fatter person in the mirror. Such a person will go beyond the normal means of weight control for fear of "excessive" weight gain when that weight is a trivial amount.
  3. There is an excessive fear of becoming overweight generally among women.
  4. The fear of gaining weight and the resulting obsession of weight gain may be accompanied by periods of binging and fasting depending on whether the person uses purgatives, fasts or does both.
  5. Pharmaceutical products for weight loss are out on the market yet victims of excessive dieting should use their discretion when taking these as they do not address the issue of sustaining a body weight which is inferior to what their height and build should allow.
  6. To see the problem of anorexia as only food or genetically related, is equally damaging as seeing it related to a specific pathology?
  7. If you are living with someone who is obsessed with their weight you may notice particular rituals like dividing food into miniscule portions and lining them up in very neat rows. They might follow this scheme with ritualistic excessive exercise.
  8. Generally affected people will suffer from hunger pangs while continually starving themselves yet they'll still see themselves as being overweight
