What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer a person can develop due to exposure to asbestos. There is much more known about that substance today than in the past. It is no longer used in construction. Areas that are found to contain asbestos are cleaned up and it is quarantined until it is all removed. Safety precautions are taken to avoid exposing the workers to the asbestos.

Even with such efforts though, many people have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma. The majority of these people are around the age of 65 or older. They have been exposed to it in the years previous and are now being diagnosed with it. The onset of Mesothelioma doesn’t occur right away though. It is generally from 20 to 50 years after the exposure. That makes it extremely difficult to pinpoint where the exposure took place in many cases.

This type of cancer is very serious because it affects the areas around the internal organs. The cancer may be either benign or malignant but either way it will be quite painful. The area that is most commonly affected by it is the lungs. The sac around the heart is also affected in many cases. When both the heart and lungs of a person are being damaged there is very little hope of a recovery.

It is extremely difficult to treat due to the way in which it attacks the body. There are methods of treatment including inserting powder into the lungs, medications, chemotherapy, and surgery. However, these types of treatments aren’t often successful at removing the cells from the body. Instead they are more for comfort of the patient and to help offset the rapid spread of the Mesothelioma to the other parts of the body.

Due to the fact that this type of cancer is so deadly, there are now laws in place that prevent the use of it. Locations with it such as apartments have been evacuated so that tenants aren’t at risk. Since a person could have been exposed to it more than five decades ago though the harm is likely already done. There are many attorneys’ out there that specialize in getting settlements for those that have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma.
