Pseudomonas can be tough to treat. If you are faced with a serious infection of Pseudomonas that does not respond to oral medications such as the antibiotic called Cipro, you could be looking at antibiotic injections or even weeks of intravenous antibiotics or even a combination of two or three different drugs. What are your treatment options? Unfortunately, pseudomonas can be highly resistant to treatment, so the options are quite limited and you'll have to follow your healthcare practitioner's choice of treatment.
Typically, once a culture is processed to confirm the pseudomonas infection, you will generally be placed on Cipro or another strong oral antibiotic. If you are reasonably healthy, this may be all the treatment you need. Those who are sick or have an immune system that has been compromised by AIDS or other disease may have great difficulty in combating the disease. Pseudomonas can lead to pneumonia and because it's an opportunistic bacteria, it takes advantage of someone who is already sick which leads to difficulties in treatment.
If oral antibiotics do not work, the next step can be injected antibiotics twice a day. You can be sent to a hospital clinic or care center for morning and evening shots that do not take long, but can leave you feeling a bit bruised. Still, if these shots work for you, it's well worth any inconvenience you endure in getting them.
A last resort can be weeks of intravenous antibiotic therapy. Again, if this is what it takes to eradicate the bacteria from your body and allow you to get on with your life, then it will all be worth it. Try to look at the bright side of the situation such as extra time for pleasure reading, enjoying a movie, or taking a much needed nap. While at the time it can seem daunting and inconvenient, your health is more important and deserves to be dealt with effectively. Having a good attitude will help your body heal and help you stay sane during the process.
