Disabled Doesn't Mean Useless

Disabilities and the unjust stigmas attached to them.

I was born with a birth defect called cerebral palsy. Over the years I have learned to deal with it. I have led quite a normal life, but I find that people with disabilities are often put down with derogatory terms like "retarded" or "gimpy"(a term I was harassed with in school)

I have many friends I grew up with that have disabilities. I believe that being abused or harassed because of ones differences is wrong. In the end, people with disabilities are no less human than anyone else. We all have differences and we all have various talents and qualities. The sooner people realize that people with disabilities have the same breath of life, and as much purpose as the rest of humanity, the sooner the hate and discrimination can stop.

If you have a disabled family member or friend, you understand first hand what I mean.Disabilities affect many people from many backgrounds and walks of life. For those who would think "Oh, it can't happen to me" I beg to differ. Disability is no respecter of person. It doesn't care if your the prince or the pauper, The football team captain or the in the band, prom king or the wallflower.

The disabled have as much right to the pursuit of happiness as anyone else. I would ask, if you see a disabled person do not ridicule them.

Hate cuts out a heart, but one caring person can restore a soul.

I learned something about you and me today. When I lived in Sydney, I worked with a group of people who had Cerebral Palsy and they were brainier than me(Accountants etc) but I could talk faster than them!It was funny. You had to be there.

Well put article. I had a severe stutter as a youth. It went on into my thirties. It still creeps up on me at times, now. It was awful.
