Ethical designers have turned their attention to disabled users, who had been neglected for a long time. One of the specialists in this field is the Ergonomi Design Group, which was founded in Sweden in 1979. They have designed tableware and furniture that benefits disabled users, but which also has high aesthetic value. Maria Benktzon designed adjustable spoons (1986) which are very modernistic and sculptural.
The Balans Chair by Peter Opsvik (1979) is a response to the fact that in our information-based society people are spending more and more time sitting in offices. Apparently, eight out of ten office workers suffer from disorders caused by strain.
The Balans chair was worked out according to ergonomics. It gives the body a more natural posture compared to conventional seating. The forward slanting seat and leg cushion automatically leads to a straightening of the spine. It allows flexibility, improved circulation and easier breathing. Ultimately it's trying to solve the health problems associated with modern office environments. That means ignoring conventional notions of what a chair should be.
