5 Reasons to Join an All Woman's Gym

An all woman's gym can be a great alternative to the more overcrowded, less personal co-ed gym. Here are five reasons to join a gym designed specifically for women.

A new year has arrived and you've made a firm commitment to get fit. You're watching your diet and are eager to start a regular exercise program. Realizing you'll be more committed if you join a gym, you explore the possibilities. You aren't eager to parade your less than perfect figure around for the world to see. If you are a bit embarrassed by the shape you're in, you may way to consider joining an all women's gym. These gyms which are popping up around the country have struck a responsive cord with women who don't want to join a traditionally male dominated gym. What are the advantages to joining an all women's gym?

Special Equipment Designed for Women

Many exclusively women's gyms have equipment specially designed for the needs of women. Curves, a gym for women only, uses hydraulic equipment designed to conform to the contours of a woman's body, ensuring proper alignment during exercise performance. This allows for a more effective workout and reduces the risk of potential injury.

They Tend to be Smaller and More Intimate

In contrast to many of the large, co-ed gyms such as Bally, fitness centers for women tend to be smaller and more intimate. You're less likely to feel lost and out of place in these smaller facilities. As a generalization, they're less crowded and stress provoking with shorter waits to use the exercise machines. After all, you don't go to the gym to feel stressed, do you?

Less Embarrassment

If you've never worked out before, it can be overwhelming to join a large, co-ed gym where it seems that everyone knows how to use the equipment. Smaller fitness centers for women have less equipment and more instructors to teach you how to do the exercises properly. Gyms for women such as Curves also tend to have more structured programs to help you reach your goals quickly and efficiently.

More Support

When you join a gym designed for women, both the members and staff tend to be friendly and supportive in your efforts to lose weight and get fit. You'll also find support among your fellow female gym members who may have experienced your same struggles and doubts about fitness and weight control. When you join a fitness center for women, you get a strong support system to help you gain confidence in your abilities.

Special Programs for Women's Needs

Many fitness centers for women have programs designed for the prevention of health problems unique to women such as osteoporosis. They may have an exercise track created specifically to help preserve bone health and build stronger bones. This is something you may want to verify before making a commitment if this issue is of concern to you.

Ok...what am I doing reading an article on women's gyms?
I spend a lot of time in the gym (did I mention--a LOT of time?), and like to get different perspectives. Your article did just that!
I have spoken with a lot of women who are uncomfortable in male dominated gyms, whether their figure is less than perfect or not.
In my experience, you have to train where you feel comfortable. I, myself, don't like to train in a gym where I don't feel comfortable, and I've been lifting for 20 years.
Nice article.
