Bodybuilding: The Importance of L-glutamine

A brief run down on why L-Glutamine is so important for bodybuilders and why we need it.

Naturally our bodies have a large supply of glutamine, being an amino acid it takes up around half of the free amino acids in our blood and muscle tissues. Being a non-essential amino acid, it can be produced easily by another form of amino acid named glutamic acid. The main function of Glutamine in our body is to provide synthesis of other amino acids and also to provide us with glucose for energy. Our immune system, small intestine and kidneys majorly rely on glutamine.

Glutamine supplements can be taken more or less at any time of day, generally a bit before and after an intensive workout to help with muscle recovery. Roughly 20 - 30 grams a day can be taken without causing and stomach or gastrointestinal problems. Glutamine supplements are generally very well priced and are a good asset to any bodybuilder or anyone looking to use bodybuilding supplements.

The main assets of supplementing with glutamine include a boost in the immune system, personally I can't even remember the last time I had a cold. It will help maintain muscle mass so you dont lose size through muscle trauma or toxins in your body. It prevents muscle breakdown, more scientifically known as muscle catabolism and most importantly it will aid your recovery, making it easier for you to push and endure an intensive training session the next time you go to the gym.
