OLD SCHOOL
In Lou Ferrigno's heyday, his 60-inch chest shredded through many a T-shirt each week as he played the Hulk. "The key to great chest development is stretching the muscle, both during and in between your sets, and starting with dumbells instead of the barbell will help you with process because of the greater range of motion allowed," remarks Lou when asked his theory on building a bigger chest: I alwats begin with 2-3 warm-up sets of 20 flat-bench dumbell presses, stretching manually only after I complete my scond warm-up adn everything is good and pumped. I will then do 4-5 working sets of 8-10, lowering the weight all the way down to my armpit, getting a good stretch, then pressing up as high as possible and squeezing at the top."
NEW SCHOOL
To develop his impressive pecs, 2003 USA heavyweight runner-up Lionel Brown concentrates on incline moves to target his upper chest. He starts with heavy incline excersises, but where it gets unconventional is where the pump really starts to kick in. Toward the end of his workout, he jumps on the Hammer-Strength incline press machine. Lionel starts by banging out 25-30 partial reps, lowering the weight just a few inches from the peak-contrasted position as he pumps his chest with these shortened-range reps. Then he goes right into 10 full-range reps, repeating the process four times. "This technique forces the blood into the muscle; I use it about once a week and, boy, does it give me the most amazing pump," he says.
