If you are a beginner runner, there are some things that you should know before you begin. These tips will keep you safe, and help you avoid injury.
- When it comes to buying running shoes, you should ALWAYS pick quality over price. If you are serious about running, you need to invest in a good pair of shoes. The average cost of a good pair is anywhere from $80-$100. They should be replaced every 300-400 miles to avoid injury.
- Keep a jogging log so that you can monitor your progress. Your log should include mileage, time, route, weather conditions, pain, and total mileage for the year. A jogging log is the absolute best way to see how much you have improved.
- Don't be afraid to run in a race. It doesn't matter how long you've been running, it's always good to have race experience. A 5k race never costs much to enter, the money goes to a good cause, and there are usually trophies and prizes.
- Always run with a partner. There is nothing more dangerous than running by yourself on extremely hot or cold days. If you can't find a partner, run in a well-lit, well-traveled area where you could immediately get help if needed.
- Before you run, map out your route, and drive it to make sure it is safe. If you want to know exactly how long your route is, go to USA Track and Field and map out your run. You can also look for routes in your town that other people have submitted.
- Always bring a cell phone with you when you run, in case something happens, and you can't get home. If you don't have any pockets, buy a clip.
- If you are going to listen to music while jogging, never play it loud enough that you can't hear cars coming
- Always dress appropriately for the weather conditions. The best thing to do in the winter is purchase under armor to wear, and in the summer, wear a tank top and always take water.
