Many Triathlons can be downright grueling - the Ironman, for example, consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 26.2 mile run, and a 112 mile bike ride. While most of us mortals wouldn't dream of undertaking a challenge like that, we can still push ourselves and do each of those three exercises.
Summer is the perfect time to set up your own mini-triathlon. With the warm weather, it is easily possible to run, bike, and swim - all outside, and for little or no cost. If you don't have a bike, good running shoes, or access to an outdoor swimming pool, a local gym or rec. center will suffice. If you run to the gym, you can ride a stationary bike there and then swim laps (or vice versa).
Pick a level of difficulty that works for you - something challenging, but not overly grueling or unrealistic. Here is an example of a formula that I have tried:
- Bike 3 miles to gym
- Run 2 miles
- Swim 15 laps
- Bike 3 miles home
Pick whatever ratio you like, but the combination of biking, swimming, and running is a good way to challenge your muscles and supply a good full body cardiovascular workout. If you aren't particularly gifted at one of the exercises, take it easy on that one. If you don't feel like Michael Phelps, just swim 5-10 laps at a rate you are comfortable with.
After you complete your mini-triathlon, post it here and tell us about it!
