Shape-Up and Swim

Swimming is one of the most popular disciplines when it comes to getting fit and changing the shape of your body - many gyms sell their memberships just on the luxury pool factor.

Injury Free

If done correctly, it can be a fantastic way to strengthen your heart and lungs, help you get toned, have better posture, as well as improve your flexibility. The main benefit with using a pool is the fact that there is no stress put on your body or joints because the water is able to support your weight - this is ideal if you want to get the maximum results possible while you keep your injury risk down to a minimum.

Despite the above benefits, people still find it difficult to take the plunge, thinking that just swimming lap after lap is boring. So here are a few more reasons why you should get wet and fit.

  • Reduce Inches

When your technique is perfected and you're pushing it, you can burn up to as much as 600 calories an hour - more than many other sports. Remember to stay hydrated though throughout the swim though , bring a water bottle. People forget that they are sweating during a session in the pool. The cold water may help you to stay cool, but your body still needs fluids.
    • Iron Lungs

One of the key elements to becoming an excellent swimmer is to have controlled breathing throughout your movement in the water. A relaxed breathing pattern will lead to a more rhythmical stroke in the pool, allowing you to swim for longer.
      • Reduce the Stress

Swimming requires so much concentration that you will easily start to forget the main stresses and worries in your life when you're in the water. Swimming should leave you feeling mentally relaxed after the session.
        • Tight and Toned

Front crawl burns most calories and will tone your arms, chest and back - especially targeting those bingo wings. On the other hand, breaststroke will tone more of your lower body - especially your butt. To get the best results, alternate between the breaststroke and the front crawl to make sure you get a full body workout.

          Mix it Up

Swimming isn't about just ploughing up the pool, doing endless lengths - it should be fun. Add variety to your workouts; even invite a friend to join you in your next workout. Training with someone else is a superb way to keep the motivation high.

To make changes to your body, you should aim to swim for at least three times a week for the next six weeks, after that who knows - you might never be the same person ever again.
