Strength training can add muscle to your body and peace to your mind. Many folks think that shrinking muscles goes with getting older. Nothing could be further from the truth .While some loss will occur with aging, daily use and strength training will help maintain weight, muscle tone, and increase bone density. Muscles actually do get smaller when they are not used. Remember the old saying, "Use it or lose it."
Lifting light weights or using especially made elastic bands for resistive training, allows muscles to expand and contract in a pushing, pulling motion at a rate that over time develops the strength and size of muscles. James A Coale, PHD, of The Virginia Military Institute in Lexington Virginia, says muscles can be restored-and even grow larger through the elastic band method. The elastic bands which can be purchased at a sports store can condition the chest, arms, shoulders, legs. back, and abdominal region. Coale also suggests using adjustable or fixed weight dumbbells, weighing from 2 to 15 pounds.
Begin working out 2 day a week gradually working up to 4 days a week. Coale advises, doing 10 to 15 reps of each exercise, two or three sets per session. Increase the bands resistance or use heavier dumbbells as the workout becomes easier. Ultimately an exercise program including cardiovascular and strength training will give you a sense of strength and well being. Always speak to your doctor before beginning any exercise program.
