Don'ts
Don't attempt weights that are too heavy, especially if they are unfamiliar to you. Remember that a correct lifting posture is more important than the actual weight that you are lifting. If the weight that you are lifting is too heavy, don't be too embarrassed to reduce it. Focus on achieving the correct lifting posture instead.
Don't follow blindly what others do. Your body may not be conditioned to carry out the same exercise. When in doubt, always consult the trainer.
Don't train when you are sick or injured. This simple piece of common sense is often neglected by a large proportion of fitness fanatics.
Don't take medication that causes drowsiness or consume alcohol before a workout. This may cause drowsiness halfway during the workout which heightens the risk of serious injury.
Don't increase workout intensity too suddenly or overexert yourself. Listen to your body instead of risking serious damage to it.
Dos
Do condition yourself with a few light and easy workouts if you have just recovered from any sickness or injuries. This similarly applies if you are just resuming an exercise routine after a long layoff. This will help your body to re-adapt to the rigours of the workout routine.
Do bring along a water bottle for hydration purposes and drink frequently. Keep you body well hydrated at all times.
Do bring along a towel with you, especially if your gym does not provide one. Remember to wipe down your machines before and after use. This is both for hygiene as well as gym etiquette purposes.
Do have a proper warm-up and cool-down. This simple act not only helps to avoid injury, but also increases the body's flexibility.
Do have a light snack or meal at least 90 minutes before your workout. This will allow your body enough time to digest the food before your workout and avoid stomach cramps.
Do stop exercising when you feel unwell. Stop when you feel giddy, breathless or nauseous. Listen to your body.
Remember to always consult a trainer when in doubt. They are here to help.
Follow the above guidelines so as to enjoy a safe and enjoyable session at the gym. Remember that a safe workout is definitely a prerequisite for a great workout!
