An all around great exercise for anyone is yoga. It is a form of exercise that can be beneficial to you no matter what your skill level is, and the vast benefits often exceed those of other forms of exercise. With the emphasis being on deep, slow breathing and slowly moving in and out of the postures it's a great exercise for more than just toning muscles. Yoga practice involves deep concentration and promotes relaxation long after the exercise is over, so at the end of your routine you are not only left with a toned body, but also increased concentration.
People often wonder how a workout that doesn't seem as intense as say, jogging for example, can be as sufficient. If you were to trade your morning jog for a yoga session your body would receive not only the same benefits as the jog, but in a bigger dosage. During a yoga session the bends, turns and twists are designed to compress targeted organs, muscles and veins. Because the postures are practiced with slow movement and often held in place for several deep breaths, the blood in the compressed area is pushed out. Holding this position causes the body to send blood to that area, and as the position is held you are essentially creating a dam for your blood to build up in the area surrounding this part of the body. As you slowly release the pose all the built up blood floods into the area, flushing out all the toxins in the process. Along with this new blood comes oxygen, revitalizing and re-energizing your organs as it comes through, cleansing your body and giving you natural energy, more than that jog.
The slow and steady movements of yoga tone your muscles by using your body to hold your own weight in different positions, which is not only good for your muscles but also your joints. Instead of the heavy impact jogging has on your joints, yoga forces you to hold these poses for periods of time which not only strengthens muscle but also builds endurance.
What yoga does for you that most other exercises can't is work out your mind too. Some of the postures require much concentration to stay balanced, and all poses encourage meditation. What makes yoga unlike most other exercises is it's advised to practice your routine in a quiet environment to allow you to put 100% concentration on the exercise. It isn't something that was created for you to practice while watching your favorite sitcoms or while listening to your radio. To reap the full mind benefits of yoga your concentration should be on breathing and holding your pose. Practicing this full concentration will reduce stress and improve your concentration throughout the day. You will begin to find that as stressful situations arise in your life you will be able to find these calm and serene feelings in yourself and use them to solve the situation with a clear head.
Before beginning a yoga practice on your own it is advisable to begin under the supervision of a trained professional, because despite all of the benefits of yoga, if you are not practicing correctly you could hurt yourself. If you are not able to visit a yoga class or practice under the guidance of a trainer try practicing yoga in front of the mirror to see whether or not your posture is correct.
