All Germs Beware

Comments about antibacterial products.

Hey all you companies out there, stop making antibacterial everything! I saw an ad on TV just today promoting new antibacterial Windex! For gosh sakes, do our window panes really need to be coated with antibacterial cleaner! Boy, that set me off. This has got to be the most ludicrous commercial idea I have heard yet. And yes, I obviously watch way too much TV. But seriously, you would think that all those brainiacs developing new products would realize that protecting ourselves and our children from any type, kind or most innocuous bacterium floating about out there in our world is not, I repeat, not a good idea.

Ever since the fad of killing every single germ became the latest “hook”in overt capitalism, more and more products are now “antibacterial”. My momma used to say that every person should eat a pound of dirt every year to stay healthy. She was halfway kidding, but she made a good point. My momma was a wise woman.

Somehow I see our civilization disappearing like the Martians in War of the Worlds. After they destroyed every major city and famous landmark on the planet, they crashed and burned because they were not immune to the bacteria that our people had developed immunities to eons ago. Too bad they didn't croak before they destroyed the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and the Vatican. Anyway, it's the same reason that all of the Mayans were wiped out shortly after the Spanish arrived on the continent. If they weren't actually killing them by the thousands, their diseases finished them off. Another example: People not indigenous to Mexico and other Central American countries suffer from Montezuma's revenge when they go there and drink the water. People who live there drink the water and suffer no ill effects. Don't worry about global warming. We'll all be dead from the common cold first. Duh….

My theory is that the reason all these virulent diseases are taking us down is because we are making sure that we are never in contact with any kind of bacteria on a daily basis. How can our bodies possibly hope to fight off disease if they not allowed to develop any immunity? When I was going to school we never had to actually shut down the schools for days at a time because so many students and teachers were absent due to illness. It was unheard of. But who am I? Just a regular person with some degree of common sense. I am not a doctor or a scientist but I think I can see the obvious. At least it is obvious to me. I hope that very soon some major study will make the headlines that will show this latest fad to be dangerous to our overall health and longevity. And just like the lemmings we all seem to be, everyone will turn around and stop using all this stuff immediately.

Don't get me wrong, there are definitely times and circumstances when we should take care to not spread germs around. Newborn babies, people with compromised immune systems, etc. (Of course, if we keep this trend up, we will all have compromised immune systems!) But just in everyday, normal life, we should just get out there and live….and stop trying to prevent every miniscule germ from touching our skin or entering our bodies in any way. In other words, people, let your kids get good and dirty every now and then! Better yet, get good and dirty with them. It's not going to kill them…..it will probably save them in the long run.

And don't you think it's strange that tens of thousands of people will pay huge amounts of money to a dermatologist to inject deadly poison into their skin, but then they make sure they rub their hands with antibacterial gel after they shake the doctor's hand? Yeah, doc, give me a big shot of botulism but don't touch me "cause I might get something from you. So, people get a clue. Look up the word “moderation” if you don"t know the meaning. Everything in moderation. Including all these antibacterial products.

Now I think I'll go wipe down my kitchen with a raw chicken. I'm a risk taker.
