Aspartame: The Hidden Killer

Diabetics and dieters looking to curb calories, especially those from sugar, face the question of: "Which artificial sweetener is right for me?"

What would you think if I were to tell you that many artificial sweeteners like Equal, Spoonful, NutraSweet, Benevia, Equal Measure, Joe Sweet, Canderel and Natra Taste, most all carry the same toxic ingredient: Aspartame. Aspartame has been used as a sweetener in foods, drinks, gum, candy, children's vitamins and yes, even in over the counter medicines. Aspartame is now in over 6,000 products.

On the sides of most every package containing this ingredient are the warning messages: “Phenylketonurics: Contains phenylalanine;” or if it mentions phenylketonuria(PKU) it more than likely has Aspartame in it. You should expect to see Aspartame anywhere sugar would be used. To break it down further, Phenylalanine is an amino acid naturally found in a person's diet, but people who consume too much of this amino acid from Aspartame use (Aspartame consists of three chemicals: 40% aspartic acid, 50% phenylalanine, 10% methanol.) begin to experience depression, frequent headaches and even memory loss. Phenylalanine has been said to speed up cancer cells and those who have cancer should avoid anything with phenylalanine.

But this is not all. Aspartic acid, found in the sting of fire ants, can cause serious chronic neurological disorders. And methanol, or wood alcohol, consumption is deadly. It breaks down into formic acid and even formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a fatal neurotoxin which reacts with cellular proteins and can even destroy DNA. Symptoms of this chemical include dizziness, nausea, retinal damage, birth defects and gastrointestinal disturbances. These are only a few symptoms.

If the fact that while you're trying to monitor your sugar intake and subjecting yourself to a possible cancer-causing agent (Aspartame), isn't bad enough, let me take you further behind the elusive Aspartame curtain.

If you are one of the millions world-wide who consume Aspartame infused items, have you noticed any achiness, fatigue, vision problems, memory loss, or other symptoms your doctor can't find an underlying cause for? If your answer is “yes” then Aspartame disease may be to blame.

Since Aspartame poisoning isn't as widely known as it should be, due to certain companies or people keeping the news under wraps, many doctors see patients with numerous complaints but cannot find what may be causing them. Countless Aspartame consumers are diagnosed with ailments they don't have. Why? Because Aspartame poisoning mimics diseases such as multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus and fibromyalgia.

For years I had been using items such as Equal, sugar-free Jell-O, sugar-free pudding, and diet soda to help me keep sugar and calorie consumption to a minimum. Sure, this helped in that department, but I was clueless as to what else was going on within my body.

On the days I would be feeling ill, which were more often than not, I would run into the bathroom and scour the medicine cabinet. Alka-seltzer, either cherry or orange flavored, would be one of the medicines I would grab. But why, I wondered, didn't it ever work as well as I had expected it to?

As months came and vanished, while I was using sugar-free items, I noticed I would spend many days sleeping because my energy levels were so low. I would ache all over even just sitting at the computer trying to work on my first novel. I also wasn't losing weight like I had been trying to. I would hit plateaus frequently. By the time I did loose weight it would be around five pounds max, and then gain it all back only to hit a plateau again. This weight gain was due to the fact that I was craving food at all hours. Perhaps an hour after a meal I would feel just as hungry as if I hadn't eaten.

Generally, my mood was sluggish and I felt that most of the time I was stumbling through a thick fog, a fog that held me captive and no matter how hard or fast I tried running to get through the curtain of mist, I had to face the fact that there was no escape. At least no escape I was aware of.

Then one day, a day of revelation and change so it would turn out, I received two e-mails from my father, both consisting of warnings and/or symptoms(1) of Aspartame poisoning. One e-mail dealt with the ninety two symptoms of Aspartame and I'll be darned if I didn't have a handful of them.

Shortly after I read the e-mails, my father and I talked about Aspartame and the symptoms we both had. The main complaint he had was pain and stiffness. There was at least once he could barely get of his chair. The other complaint he had was chest pain and with my father in his early sixties I was worried about him having a heart attack. Unlike myself, my father didn't fuss over sugar consumption, therefore he didn't ingest all of the products I would use. However, sometimes when he was round home, but mostly while he worked at Wal*Mart, he would chew a stick of Wrigley's Doublemint Gum. There have been reports that all you need is to chew one stick of sugar-free gum in order to start feeling the affects of Aspartame.

Thanks for sharing this. My heart poured out for you when I read this. But by writing this article, maybe some good will come, of all the pain you and your family have experienced. It's certainly given me some things to think about. I'd no idea of the terrible problems associated with Aspartame. I've cut down on sugar-free products in the last few years, but after learning what you've been through, I'm going cold turkey for good. Thanks again.

Hey Girl. This was a great article. I knew your mom died of ovarian cancer, but Wow to find out that she didn't have ovaries and that this poision has this deadly effect. Something needs to be done, there are so many people you usa sugar free or have no choice to use sugar free, And now they might have to fight for their life, because people thought this would be good to use in foods. People just don't think anymore when it comes to making products that people eat or drink, They have made it unsafe, like children are unsafe from kidnappers. I miss you girl. This was a very good article. Keep up the good work.
