Binge drinking is when a person consumes several drinks in a short amount of time, example having three or four shots in a row and then a few more drinks. What these young people don't know and even some adults, is that binge drinking can be the worst way to consume alcohol. In adults who drink regularly it is reported that 90% of them have binge drank in the last 30 days at least twice. About 90 % of the alcohol consumed by students and children under the age of 21 is consumed by binge drinking, this is a huge number and it is a huge health risk for these young people.
Drinking regularly obviously can have a big impact on your health, but binge drinking even once in a while not only can have some serious long term effects but also short term. It is reported that people who binge drink are more likely to have a minor accident, hurting them selves or someone else, they are more likely to drive impaired, and are more likely to engage in a physical argument. Drinking impairs your judgement especially if you just drank four or five times the normal amount, which is two to three drinks over a period of several hours.
For the young people who engage in binge drinking, not only are they putting their health at risk but their safety and education. More student who binge drink have reported being a victim of a sexual assault, or have had their studies interrupted, usually from lack of sleep. Students say they binge drink to get drunk, to fit in, or because they are in a fraternity.
Having a few drinks once in a while is ok, but what people are doing to them selves just to have a good time, needs to stop. The long tern effects of binge drinking can result in multiple health problems and can lead to alcoholism and other related drugs addictions. Teaching our kids and our selves to drink responsible is so important. So the next time you go our to have a few drinks be responsible, for you, your friends and for those you don't even know. Drinking is serious and shouldn't be abused. Take care and stay healthy.
