Gingivitis is when the gums swell and become inflamed due to bacteria in plaque, a thin transparent film that sticks to the teeth. If plaque is not removed, it forms a tartar, a process that promotes tooth decay.
You can suspect gingivitis if your swollen gums bleed easily when pressed or when you brush your teeth. Left untreated, gingivitis soon progresses to periodontitis, a more serious condition that eventually leads to tooth loss.
The primary cause of gingivitis is poor dental hygiene aggravated by rough tooth surfaces or fillings. Smoking or grinding the teeth also speeds up the process of gingivitis.
To prevent or to help treat gingivitis:
- Floss regularly. Have your dentist or hygienist show you how to floss most efficiently.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Your dentist can show you the most effective ways to brush your teeth.
- Massage your gum tissue daily.
- Use an interproximal brush, which is designed to brush between the teeth.
- Have your teeth professionally cleaned regularly
- Take care of your teeth and gums and keep them for life.
