Hangover Prevention and Remedies

Ways to prevent and somewhat help alleviate hangovers due to excessive drinking.

Before Drinking:

One easy way to feel less the effects of alcohol is to eat a 2 small or one medium bag of potato chips an hour or so before drinking alcohol.

An alternate method is to eat a sandwich (possibly baguette or ciabatta) made with lots of salami and butter (yes, I do realize the taste would be awful, but hey it helps; at the max you can eat one salami sandwich and one with just butter). This way the bread/potato chips will absorb some of the alcohol before it has the chance to get absorbed into your blood stream.

A good way to prevent getting wasted right away is to always drink the same thing, don't mix alcohols, and if you order/make cocktails make sure to at least drink the same kind. Different alcohols consumed in the same time lapse will cause weariness quicker, splitting headaches and cause major hangovers, and, if you are a woman taking oral contraceptives, and you took your pill 4 hours earlier you are no longer protected (if you regurgitate that is, so be careful with that too).

Another remedy, used primarily by Native Americans was to eat raw almonds before drinking any alcoholic beverage to reduce the chance of suffering from any hangover.

Peanut Butter is also thought to be of somewhat remedy.

Remember to try to have a sports drink (like Gatorade) which will replenish the minerals that the kidneys excreted during your drinking. If you regurgitate due to excessive drinking, let it all out of your system and then have a sports drink to give you back some minerals.

If you had a long night of drinking, water (about 3 glass fulls should be enough) will help rehydrate you. Drinking makes you lose a lot of fluids, going to bed dehydrated will just leave the alcohol in your system at it's concentrated levels and will cause you to feel their effects later on.

Remember to not take painkillers such as aspirin, ibrofen and the like. If taken in high quantities or on a continuous basis they'll start to cause problems to your kidneys (such as kidney failure).

After Hangover: Homemade remedies:

  1. Lemon: Pour some lemon juice (of 1 lemon) to a cup of black coffee and drink it, no sugar, no milk.
  2. Chicken soup - just as it works with colds, it can also help rid you of your hangover.
  3. Honey: take about 2 table spoon fulls every 30 minutes since you wake up till you start feeling better.
  4. Apples: Eat some as soon as you wake up, it will somewhat help you feel better.
  5. Lastly, and probably most effective is to make a banana and honey milkshake. Take 3 bananas, pour in some milk and honey, blend it all till it's all nice and smooth and gulp it down, it will help sooth and settle your stomach, calming your nerves and ultimately relieving you of your splitting headache due to a major hangover.

Remember it's much easier to prevent than to cure, drink responsibly and make sure not to drive if you've had to drink, even if you think you would be able to, better off safe than sorry. If you don't care about your well being nor that of those around you then just remember that whatever damage you cause you will have to pay out of your own pocket.

I learned this years ago while driving ambulance for the military. When you have a hangover and access to an oxygen bottle, take a few good hits of the oxygen and your problem is solved.

This was backed up years later when I moved to a different part of the country and took a course from professional paramedics, they always make sure that some one brings an oxygen bottle to help with the morning after for parties.

drinking two or three pints of water before hitting the sack after a night of drinking has always prevented me from having a headache or any gastrointestinal problems the next day. i do tend to wake up a little spacey, but never anything i would call sick or unpleasent. but thats just me.

All the above remedies are good for you, in comforting you from a hangover. But the only real way to avoid having one in the first place is by taking 2 aspirins (each with a big glass of water) just before you go to sleep. Simple, easy and it always works.

The most tried and tested technique .. which we guys exercise.. before we leave for a party (abt 2 hrs in advance).. we try to drink 1 glass of curd shake. (approx. 3 parts curd + 1 part water + 1/2 part milk and sugar to taste) ... that works

"Different alcohols consumed in the same time lapse will cause weariness quicker, splitting headaches..."

Wow, well that totally explains the other night. I'll keep that in mind.

Aspirin and V8 or some other kind of veggie juice to replenish your vitamine and electrolyte levels before you go to bed. And if you don't respond to aspirin, you can take Tylenol or Advil, though not recommended.

My hangover cure is a pint of 1/3rd orange juice, 2/3rd water for rehydration and sugar, a fresh raw egg for protein, and a pinch of salt for sodium. If you can grab a banana as well - that's good for potassium. If you don't have all that, go and buy a rehydrating sports drink.

I used to work as a ski instructor in Vermont. We partied hard, but always had to haul our asses out on the slope the next morning. Don't know where it originated, but the inside tip on gettin' er done was three nalgene bottles of water before closing your eyes/passing out, and then something greasy in the morning (the ski lodgge's egg-mcmuffin rip-off did the trip) to settle the stomach and absorb some of the badness. I never missed a day on the slopes.

DO NOT take aspirin Tylenol or anything of the sort , you'll just bust out your liver and kidneys.
A hangover means exactly this: dehydration and lack of vitamins and minerals. Just drink a lot of water from the moment you start drinking alcohol until you go to sleep (you'll piss most of it because of the alcohol , just drink more afterwards). Also eat before , during and after drinking alcohol.
If you're still awake a while after drinking so much , try taking a multivitamin and minerals before going to bed. If you seem to be having a hangover in the morning , take another vitamin/minerals and eat a nutritious meal.

As the article says , NEVER MIX DRINKS. I know this from experience , lots of it. If you're drinking vodka , by all means knock yourself out on vodka , just don't top it off with beer or something else.
Also , drink QUALITY drinks. It's hard to explain to people that don't usually drink alcohol , but make sure it's good.
Some people think that the more a drink stings your tongue the better it is. That's WRONG. Good vodka for example should have a nice smooth taste. Needless to say , the more it stings the more of a hangover you'll have.
As for bourbons , Jack Daniels is the best. They filter it though charcoal and that really makes it so much easier on my stomach , and i tend to avoid hangovers if i just stick to Jack.
This also reminds me , you can filter Vodka and other drinks though an active carbon filter (you can buy those for water). It actually helps a lot. Also , filtering cheap drinks though it will produce a much better result , the taste will be smoother and milder (i believe that's the difference between cheap and expensive vodka , the expensive kind is filtered in the factory).

Forgot to mention, never drink on an empty stomach. Food preoccupies your liver and thus alcohol will get into the blood stream more slowly. You'll also avoid acid reflux/heartburn this way.

Drinking water BEFORE a night out is the best way to avoid the dehydration associated with a hangover.

The best cure I've found once you do have the hangover is ...

>>> Alka Seltzer Morning Relief.
#15 by Poco got it Right, Jul 9, 2007
Alka Seltzer Morning Relief = amazing.

Plop Plop Fizz Fizz

It has caffiene to wake you, settles your stomach, and pain reliever for the headache. Plus, if you have a bad hangover you're probably feeling a little queezy and this goes down nice and smooth.

They don't sell it in most stores, so you have to order it online, which I am going to go do right now.

Drink water before. during and after a drinking binge - also, sleeping with unattractive women will make you feel horrible the morning after.
#17 by hello, Jul 9, 2007
someone just has to say it....

if you drink like a crapload for your body size/type/etc... i.e. "enough", there is simply no way to avoid a hangover.

ever ended up in a hospital due to too much alcohol consumption?

having those few glasses of water before you started downing a bottle of tequila in 30min will not do anything for your hangover!

When I have a hangover I always find a can of Irn Bru alleviates it considerably. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irn-Bru

Two glasses of milk prior to drinking - also alleviates the alcohol affects later.

Cheers!!

I've never seen so much speculation in one place...

Very good, write an authoritative article that lists 3 or 4 random things that you tried, that seem to work for you.

Hangovers are partially due to dehydration and depletion of salts, etc. but it goes beyond that - they are not completely understood.

Some of these remedies may work for you, but I assure you these are not "the" remedies, and they may (probably) will not work for you. Apples?

Acetaminophen (tylenol) has the potential to damage your liver in combination with alcohol, as will exedrine (acetaminophen + caffeine) - however aspirin and ibuprofen (advil) are processed by the kidneys and will not. Aspirin after a night of heavy drinking might upset your stomach and cause GI problems along those lines, but doesn't have the direct potential to cause liver damage.

The only thing that really works for me is coffee followed by a pint of nice ice-cold 5% lager. It's not too good if you have to go to work but you probably smell anyways.

Not to be a party spoiler... but here are some other 100% proven tips to avoid the hangover:

1) Don't drink a lot of alcohol
2) Only drink a little alcohol
3) Try avoiding beverages containing alcohol
4) Keg stands are not good for hangovers.
5) Flaming drinks and rounds of shots are definitely bad.

I have tried steps 1-3 a few times and found that I woke up with no hangover at all, it was really fantastic!
#23 by Jay, Jul 9, 2007
Pretty much sound info, except for the bag of chips. Part of the pains of a hangover is the immense sugar spike in the blood. Potatoes are *very* high in natural sugar...which wouldn't help the cause at all.
#24 by JBird, Jul 9, 2007
the best way to get rid of a hangover is to just get drunk again. as soon as you wake up, start doing shots and chug a beer. your hangover will be gone within minutes. Anytime you start feeling a headache, just do a couple of shots and your day will be great. This works for me every time. I might wake up with a splitting headache, but in twenty minutes, I feel better than ever.
#25 by Jbravo, Jul 10, 2007
Try getting some b-complex vitamines before getting into bed, they will calm your stomach down, and allow you to fall asleep easier (no "room is spinning" feeling). Also get some after you wake up. Sparkling mineral water, coffee with NO sugar, a REALLY cold beer might also help. Try to get something to eat, but avoid greasy stuff, they will help you in the long run, but you'll probably feel like throwing up while you're eating. Avoid sugarry treats and such (candy bars etc.). Lie down for 30 minutes after you have taken some of the above remedies (b-complex, mineral water, cofee), and try to keep your neck as high as possible, while keeping your head low ( o^- - something like this, its kinda hard to explain :) ), this may work wonders, but there's a chance you wont feel any better from that (i guess that depends from person to person). Get a LOT of fresh air, try laying near an open window, anything that will get you lots of fresh air. AVOID CIGARETTES, no matter how much of a passionate smoker you are, try not to light one up, until your hangover goes away (okay, maybe just one wont hurt, but dont overdo it ;) ). Try listening to calming music, maybe watch some TV, something to keep your mind away from the uneasyness of your stomach, your terrible headache and your shakey bones (if you really had an all-out night).

I have tried all of these methods, and they sometimes work great, sometimes they help easing the headache, but the uneassyness in the stomach remains, merely dependig on what/how/when/how fast/how much i drank.

p.s.
The WORST hangover is got from mixing hard liquors - ex. vodka - whiskey - rum - gin.... Dont try this combination in large quantities ;)

try eating a can of tuna (in oil) about 2 hours before going
for drinking. the tuna is "difficult" to digest and cause the alcohol get absorbed into the blood slower. u can drink more this way.

I had a paramedic mate who'd swear the best and quickest way to get rid of a hangover (not prevent) was as Ron Paul says IV (one dextrose and one saline) and a 10min doze whilst it's being administered. I suppose ok for a paramedic to do but exactly a home remedy.

Here are my tricks:

* Drink a few big glasses of water before bed with a multivitamin or one of those Emergen-C packets.
* Keep a bottle of water or a sports drink near the bed while you sleep
* SLEEP IT OFF (seriously... if you have to be up the next morning, don't drink heavily)
* You'll be spacey the next day, maybe with an upset stomach. Eat something greasy like bacon or chorizo con huevos (my favorite). Drink ginger ale or lemon lime soda (I stay away from the coffee)
* Headache only cured with aspirin if it's the next day. If it's same-day hangover (i.e. headache before going to bed), drink a bunch of water and sleep it off.

(side note: my confirmation code is kesg7... so close to kegs7)
#29 by Pat, Jul 10, 2007
I agree with Fuzzy, especially the bullet point about multivitamins (especially if they contain vitamin B-12, which the body loses when it is processing alcohol). Buy a 500 tablet Kirkland Signature general MV container at costco for 10 bucks was the best investment ever for college drinking.

Take the MV with almost a full nalgene of water before bed, and an aspirin with water after you get up, with some food, and you will be golden.

how bout not drinking into drunkenness, maybe when you wake up more than a few times hung over might mean you have a problem with alcohol. normal people don't get smashed when the drink..just a suggestion.

The water thing works for me. At least three pints of water before I go to bed, another pint next to my bed for during the night and a pint of sparkling water for consumption immediately after waking up. Then, no matter how upset my stomach is, I eat a normal breakfast (i.e. cornflakes and orange juice).
It's only left me down once.
#36 by Frank, Jul 11, 2007
Tomatojuice or (even better) tomatosoup. Two cans of tomatopulp, some chicken stock, few chili's (I like it hot myself), some sellery or other stuff you have lying around. Simmer, blend, eat.
#37 by Christine, Jul 11, 2007
Drink a ton of water before you go to bed. Then, as soon as possible after waking up, eat a huge, greasy cheeseburger and a banana-honey milkshake. You'll feel right as rain.

The meal can also be substituted with a breakfast burrito and a Bloody Mary.
#38 by toofer, Jul 11, 2007
These are all ridiculous old wives tales. You get hungover because you're dehydrated. Ergo, salty foods like potato chips will be BAD.

Mixing liquors: alcohol is alcohol. It makes no difference. An individual may have different reactions to varying sugar levels in some liquors, but that's it.

Eating a sammich, etc: I can't believe anyone actually thinks that works. Sure the alcohol is absorbed by the bread, but the bread will be digested and the alcohol will enter the bloodstream. The best reason for eating before you go out bingeing is that your stomach is full and therefore there's less room for alcohol.

Hair of the dog: definitely doesn't work. Want to feel good in the morning? Drink 16oz of water before you pass out, drink 16oz of water or a Gatorade first thing in the morning, if you have a headache take some ibuprofen, then have a _Virgin Mary_ or even better just drink some tomato juice (or any kind of juice). If you have some multivitamins around, those are good too. Skip the extra alcohol and coffee/tea/coke until you're rehydrated.

in reply to #41, sorry to burst your bubble but you're wrong.
If you have food with hig absorbtion properties such as potato chips and bread they will act like a sponge, absorb the alcohol and make it take more time for it to reach the small intestine (where 80% of alcohol is absorbed, the other 20% is in the stomach).
It dosen't take a genius to figure out that an empty stomach will feel a lot more the effects of alcohol than a full one.

Again it doesen't take a genius to figure out that if you mix different alcohols you will feel sicker faster. If you don't believe it, next time your at a party try having only one kind of drink on a stomach full of bread/chips then come back here and tell me if it didn't change anything for you.

The best hangover remedies are:

1 - Don't drink like an idiot
2 - Late night pizza with water
3 - If you've been an idiot, sleep until the room stops spinning
4 - If you weren't an idiot before you got drunk, have sex
5 - If none of the above works, spend 20 minutes in a sauna
6 - Or spend 20 minutes at the gym or jogging

These really work!

This works wonders for me, but some may think drugs arent such a remedy, even though I post the two simplest steps of my hangover prevention system:
1) Magnesic Metamizol (A.K.A Nolotil) pill before going to bed after a "hard night"
2) Loooooong hot shower in the morning

Extra: May be useful to repeat step 2 by midday.

It's clear from all these comments that all remedies do not work for everyone. i've got the tried and tested remedy which will work accross the board, for anyone, any age, any size.

KNOW YOUR LIMIT AND STICK TO IT! IF YOU DON'T GET DRUNK, YOU'LL NOT HAVE A HANG OVER TO CURE! THIS SEEMS TO BE CYSTAL CLEAR TO ME.
#52 by Stork B, Jul 26, 2007
Trust me... the best way to avoid a hang over is to black out the night before. Chances are, if you black out hard enough you will wake up in the morning still blacked out. This way you won't remember being hungover, or you might die. In which case it would be impossible to have a hangover.
#53 by Nick, Jul 26, 2007
Do take Aspirin of Ibuprofen for headache rather than Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) which in combination with alcohol team up to beat hell out of your liver.

Drink large amounts of water, but remember forcing down multiple pints of water in succession is not good either.

Eating before drinking merely slows down absorption, your body will still have to process everything you have drunk.
#54 by PB - RN, Jul 26, 2007
Before drinking - eat protein (meat, soy, it doesn't matter), and drink water like crazy. Drink one drink, one cup of water...all night.

The morning after - Wake up, eat something light (toast/cornflakes). Drink a very large glass of cool water with a spoonful of sugar and a half teaspoon of salt (cheaper than gatorade and you'r more likely to have sugar and salt in your kitchen than gatorade). Take a multivitamin, two aspirin and take a two hour nap.

IV fluids and all the rest of the above listed crap is just that...crap. Junk science. The bit about ibuprofen and aspirin instead of acetaminophen is good. Acetaminophen/Tylenol is processed by your liver (as is alcohol).
#55 by Sam, Jul 26, 2007
Easiest way I have ever found to get rid of hangover headaches is to smoke a bowl of the flowers of a cannabis plant. It will also make you hungry so you can eat a meal and drink water without feeling nauseous.
#56 by Jjean, Jul 27, 2007
I'd have to agree that if you want to prevent a hangover, you're going to have to avoid drinking to excess. Eating before during and after will help you to avoid becoming more intoxicated than you intend to. As will staying well hydrated (if you have one drink, you need one 8 once glass of water).
On the occasions when you overdo it, I've found that a bowl of soup, a cup of coffee, several glasses consisting of 1/4 lemonade and 3/4 water, and a multivitamin are the best thing for me.
Also, eat something healthy every time you feel hungry that day. You've damaged your body to some extent, and it's important to give it the energy and nutrients to repair. One more note, try not to "overdo it" very often! Most people only get one liver!
#57 by angie, Aug 6, 2007

I usually wake up and pop a Zomig (Zolmitriptan) and take a 30 minute nap, you can literally feel the headache being forced out of you, although Zomig makes me twitchy and irritable for the rest of the day.

Heres how to fix a hangover, none of the B.S in this blog works. Trust me. Except the food part, always eat fatty foods before a night of drinking.

Ginger Tea to the Rescue
Since ancient times, Chinese physicians have regularly consumed ginger tea to keep their vitality fired up. Ginger is famous as an aid for digestive distress. It has been found to soothe the digestive lining and balance gastric juices.

Cut a 2-inch piece from fresh ginger root, and thinly slice this piece. Bring three cups of water to boiling in a pot. Add the sliced ginger and reduce heat to a simmer. Brew for about five minutes. Then strain out the ginger and sip the tea slowly. You may also add some honey if you find the ginger tea too spicy.

Heal Your Aching Head
A symptom of too much drinking that may haunt you the next morning is a headache. To treat this painful side effect, try drinking this herbal tea, which will help reduce head pressure:

Boil 2 tbsp each of chrysanthemum flowers and mint leaves in 4 cups of water for 15 minutes. Drink this tea throughout the day until your headache subsides.

Some other herbs that can help relieve headaches are feverfew, wintergreen, chamomile, and passionflower.

Also, don't underestimate the power of natural essential oils. Prepare this compress to alleviate your headache: Put 5 drops of lavender essential oil in 1 cup of warm water. Dunk a towel in the water and then wring it dry. Place it on your forehead and relax.

Drink Up!
Water, that is. Alcohol dehydrates your system, and drinking plenty of water will help combat all of your unpleasant hangover symptoms, rehydrate your body, as well as flush the wastes from your body.

I hope you will not find many occasions to use these hangover remedies, and that they help in times of need! I invite you to visit often and share your own personal health and longevity tips with me.

drink water , take bcomplex.....before bed drink water
and a teaspoon of "raw" honey..the ezymes in raw unprocessed
honey help the liver to process alcohol. DON"T over eat before bed !

get as drunk as you want....
just make sure you score with a nurse who can administer a drip of saline and a vitamin b injection.
went out with a nurse for about 3 months and throughout this period the longest I ever held a hangover was 20mins... (none of this 10hrs of feeling like death and still not feeling 100% 2 days later)

Only problem being that it kind of encouraged me to completely labotomise myself when I went out as the next day there were no real consequence!

oxygen helps as well..... although this wasn\'t as readily available.

nothing else works quick enough or as effectively IMO... (and I\'m taliking about real hangovers where you\'re hands and feet go numb, where you throw up bile and can\'t hold anything down, can\'t move, alcohol poisoning types!)

I thought this article was very interesting though there is usually no known cure for the effects of alchahol. One thing is for certain food and water could only help. Alchahol has a tendency to promote rapid dehydration in the body. I personally found drinking a couple of glasses of water before you go to sleep will hold its own as a hangover remedy.
