A few things that can cause runny nose are a cold, allergies or an infection. Runny nose is a common feature associated with fever in the flu season. This occurs due to the drying up of the nostrils and the irritation ensuing thereby. Irritation in the nose turns into cold.

If the liquid coming from nose is clear, it is probably a cold or allergies. But if it is green or yellow and accompanied by fever, you might just need antibiotics. If you have a runny nose that lasts more than five days, a fever or any pain, it is time to see a doctor.

For the regular guardians, just keep the tissues close at hand and wash your hands a lot because your hands are the quickest way to spread germs to other people. If a person who is suffering from cold blows his nose or cough into his hand and touches any things or surfaces and later if a person who is not affected by cold touches the surfaces and again touches his mouth or nose, he is sure to contact cold. Other than that, cold and flu germs also spread through sneezing and coughing.

Some tips to control and prevent the severity of runny nose includes; Intake of lots of fluids will help to curtail dehydration in the body arising due to continuous nasal discharge; Intake of fresh juices preferably containing Vitamin C, like orange juices will help a lot; To take only warm food items freshly cooked and to avoid cold dishes or dishes heated in micro oven; To use and immediately throw away disposable tissues after blowing the nose and to clean the hands dry by using disinfectant soaps / hand wash; and To inhale decongestant vapour frequently.
