From now on you may want to take the phrase “cool as a cucumber” literally. Cucumbers, scientifically referred to as Cucumis sativus, can help you to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The skin of the cucumber contains silica (for healthy hair, skin, and nails), potassium (conducts transmission of nerve impulses), and magnesium (strength and formation of bones and teeth). It's composed of water, vitamin C, and caffeic acid, all which sooth skin irritations and reduce swelling, hence the reason cucumbers are commonly placed under the eyes and/or on sunburns.
Cucumbers have also been proven to cool people down and drop blood pressure to healthy levels. Their high water content (about 96%) is excellent for hydrating the body.

- You can always add cucumber to your salad for a vitamin and mineral boost!
- Cucumber Lemonade: Mix 1 peeled cucumber and 2 quarts of lemonade in a pitcher and serve over ice. Delicious!
- Cucumber Sandwiches: Get 1 package of Cream Cheese, a package of Italian dressing mix, 2-3 thinly sliced cucumbers, dill weed, and your choice of bread. I like rye. Mix the Cream Cheese and Dressing Mix and spread on the bread adding cucumbers on top of the bread, sprinkle with dill weed and enjoy!
For Your Body:
- Facial Mask: Mix ¼ of a cucumber and 2 tbsp yogurt together in a bowl. Mash the cucumber up to get a nice paste. Apply to the face for 20-25 minutes and rise off. This mask will refine and tone your face and skin.
