What is Brachytherapy and How Does it Help?
These are excellent questions. Brachytherapy is the way that your doctor treats your prostate cancer. You will be taken to a room where brachytherapy is done. Your doctor may have order a medicine to be given to help you relax. You and your doctor will have determined the type of anesthesia that is right for you. A small tube, also called a catheter, is placed into the tumor. Tiny seed size radioactive rods are placed in the prostate tumor through the catheter. Think about the size of a small grain of rice and that is about the size of the radioactive rods placed in the tumor. These radioactive rods cause the tumor to get smaller. The brachytherapy machine is computer - controlled and allows the doctor to see as the machine pushes the radioactive rods through the catheter and into the tumor. There is no danger from radiation to your family members, loved ones or caregivers after the procedure is complete and the rods are in place. The catheter is then easily removed. The doctor determines how many rods are needed and how long they will stay in place. Brachytherapy is usually done in one day and you will be able to return home with your family members, loved ones and caregivers after treatment is completed.
Brachytherapy does have some possible side effects that your doctor will discuss with you before the treatment. Most of these are related to urination. Brachytherapy has a faster recovery time. Always talk with your doctor about any treatment that you will be receiving.
