Circumcision: Mums Don’t Take Your Infant Sons to Town

Circumcision is sexual mutilation practiced extensively by Muslims and Jews. They claim that circumcision has many benefits. None have been demonstrated. Circumcision exposes young, living, sensitive, male infants to surgical trauma and unnecessary pain. These are both costly and harmful. This ritual and religions practice needs to end. We do not have the right to mutilate our next generation in the name of religion or culture, particularly because research shows that it is harmful to the child.

Circumcision is defined as the excision of the foreskin of the glans penis. It is both a religious ritual and a cultural practice which has many followers in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Muslim parts of Asia. It is practiced extensively by Muslims and Jews alike. Believers of the ritual state that there are many advantages of circumcision. Current research shows that circumcision does not have any advantage. The World Health Organization, a branch of the United Nations, has published information which recommends that the practice of routine circumcision be discontinued. This article too argues against circumcision, particularly infant circumcision.

Male infant circumcision has been made an acceptable practice by convincing the “ill informed” that there is a flap of skin, called the foreskin, at the end of the penis which is not needed or necessary. This is a myth and it is factually incorrect. The foreskin is a functional part of the penis. It is alive, has living tissue, has a blood supply, and has a rich supply of sensitive nerves. The foreskin has twelve essential functions. These vital functions are lost when a child or an adult is circumcised.

An infant's penis (male organ) is not well developed. Therefore cutting even a little extra removes growing tissues which will have consequences when the infant grow up. Excision of the frenulum will result in the infant never being able to experience a true sexual orgasm. When circumcision is done under a general anesthetic then it carries all the postoperative risks of surgery

As a human being, I am opposed to circumcision because it is done on children. Circumcision is a form of genital mutilation whether we like it or not. When these children grow up they find that a vital part of them is missing. They never know what it would have felt like to have that part of them. At best, we as a society should consider letting children grow up and then let them choose. Also by then the penis has grown and the person can choose which parts he want to keep and which parts he wants to get rid off. There are many other articles on circumcision

We as a society are unwittingly imposing our views onto our young ones. This is being done in the name of education, culture, religion and refinement. This may well be true for many of the things which we teach our young ones. This is definitely not true for circumcision. There are no benefits to circumcision. Circumcision is harmful, unhealthy and a myth which must be dispelled. Here are some more, not so nice, consequences of circumcision. Circumcision reduces sensitivity of the male penis in three different ways. These are discussed below.

Loss of Sensitive Nerve Endings

An infant's penis is not fully developed. Circumcising it is painful for the infant patient and results in loss of the prepuce, the frenulum, part of the glans, and associated nerve endings. Therefore a circumcised penis is less sensitive because it has lost nerve endings and penis tissue which were present in the foreskin. The foreskin and the frenulum are the most erogenous zones of the glans penis.

In an intact penis the frenulum is the dark part on the posterior aspect of glans. The dark coloration is due to nerve endings. Circumcision removes these nerves. Circumcision at birth or in early life is a bad idea because the infant penis is poorly differentiated into the different parts which I have described.

Damage to the Glans

I have stated that the most erogenous zones are the foreskin and the frenulum. During circumcision these are removed. Consequently the erogenous sensitivity that remains after circumcision is primarily in the glans. In the intact penis the glans is protected by the by foreskin. Removal of the foreskin removes the protective foreskin. This leaves the glans penis permanently exposed to drying and rubbing with rough clothing etc. This makes the glans rough and less sensitive.

The glans of the penis does not possess a protective layer of skin. The exposed glans therefore becomes rough and less sensitive. The glans is like the eyeball. It is naturally lubricated and highly sensitive. The natural uncircumcised glans is protected by the foreskin, like the eye ball. When an infant becomes circumcised the glans is exposed to the elements and it becomes keratinized. A keratinized glans is therefore less sensitive just like an exposed eyeball or a keratinized clitoris, in young women.

In conclusion to this section it is fair and reasonable to conclude that circumcision leads to the removal of the erogenous zones (foreskin and frenulum). Additionally, circumcision results in the desensitization of the remaining glans by leaving it exposed.

Loss of Erogenous Pleasure and Sexual Satisfaction

The nerve endings in the glans are complex touch receptors. Technically they are called mechanoreceptors. They are different from the high touch receptors located in the dermis of the skin which detects surface friction. The mechanoreceptors of the intact glans penis are stimulated by massage action during sexual intercourse. The skin receptors are stimulated surface friction.

When there is an ample supply of prepuce (foreskin) it forms a highly mobile skin system which moves forwards and backwards over the glans penis with pressure from the opposing surfaces. An optimal amount of stimulation of the glans is achieved during intercourse and masturbation when the foreskin is present. When the foreskin has been removed then there is friction only. Direct friction activates the pain receptors as opposed to erogenous pleasure centers. Direct friction causes further keratinization of the glans.

In conclusion to this section it is fair to state that circumcision removes the skin system of the infant's glans penis. This obliterates the skin mobility which is essential for the stimulation of mechanoreceptors and the erogenous zone. The end result is loss of sexual pleasure. The sexual pleasure which circumcised men obtain is not the same as sexual pleasure which men with intact penis get. The lack of sexual pleasure, by circumcised men, leads them to masturbate more than men with intact penis. Only men with intact penis are able to enjoy true sex! The combined actions of the intact foreskin and the intact glans result in a higher level of erogenous stimulation. This sort of stimulation cannot be experienced by the circumcised male and is unknown to him.

Shergill is a quack and actual research proves him wrong.
I posted this on another of his articles but for those interested I'll repost:

For a medical practitioner Shergill you don't have a very good bedside manner, I dare to call you bigoted against the circumcised even though you know that in the long term scheme of things there are health benefits to circumcision such as cleanliness and less pestilences,

as for your research that you asked for so badly, here it is.

"Circumcision of males represents a surgical "vaccine" against a wide variety of infections, adverse medical conditions and potentially fatal diseases over their lifetime, and also protects their sexual partners. In experienced hands, this common, inexpensive procedure is very safe, can be pain-free and can be performed at any age. The benefits vastly outweigh risks. The enormous public health benefits include protection from urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted HIV, HPV, syphilis and chancroid, penile and prostate cancer, phimosis, thrush, and inflammatory dermatoses. In women circumcision of the male partner provides substantial protection from cervical cancer and chlamydia. Circumcision has socio-sexual benefits and reduces sexual problems with age. It has no adverse effect on penile sensitivity, function, or sensation during sexual arousal. Most women prefer the circumcised penis for appearance, hygiene and sex. Given the convincing epidemiological evidence and biological support, routine circumcision should be highly recommended by all health professionals. BioEssays 29:1147-1158, 2007. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc." I would say that contradicts the majority of your article, and shows, as I stated, that you Shergill are a quack,

I suppose, as is evident by your liberal campaign against circumcision, you must really like Urinary Tract Infection, but spreading your propaganda and passing it off as \"fact\" when research proves you wrong is utterly foolish and anyone who has actually researched the subject knows you are off base and ignorant.

Circumcision is cleaner and if you were anything more than a bigoted liberal activist you wouldn\'t be misleading people like you are.

Good Day John,

You can call me anything you like as long as it keeps you happy.

"Cutting off" of a body part cannot be healthy. The penis has evolved to it's present form, slowly but surely, with a foreskin. This is because it gives, men with a foreskin, a biological advantage.

The foreskin has nerves, blood vessels and living tissue. If it was not beneficial it would have become a vestigial organ by now. The appendix is an example of a vestigial organ. No amount of circumcisions has given men the biological advantage which you imply. Nevertheless you are entitled to your views.

Please call me as many names as you like. I believe it will make you feel superior.

I would give more weight to World Health Organization's report rather than Wiley Publications. Wiley Publications is a "for profit" organization which is owned by special interest groups. The publication may give the view of one or two persons. The United Nations, World Health Organization, represent the world, circumcised and uncircumcised. Read their recommendations.

Of course, we live in a free world. You have called me names. You can continue to do that. Maybe it will also help you feel better than me but I am not in competition with you.

Maybe that is how you win arguments. Maybe nobody has ever expressed a different view than the one you hold. My style is different - I'm a liberal. I can tolerate you because I understand where you are coming form. It is sad that you do not understand where I am coming from.

May is suggest that you hold down some the the infants who are being circumcised.
May I suggest that you read the comments by other health care workers.
May I suggest that you try and pass water with you foreskin cut off.
May I suggest that you try and pass water with your glans in a bandage.
May I suggest you deal with the childhood trauma of circumcision.
May I suggest you try and deal with a bleeding penis.
May I suggest you deal with an infected glans penis.
May I suggest you counsel an adult who wants a larger penis but had his natural organ cut off.
May I suggest you try and bandage a shrivelled penis.
May I suggest you tell a child that you want to cut off a part of his penis which will make is smaller and keratinised.
May I suggest you tell an infant that it is painless.
May I suggest that you write a report to World Health Organization, United Nations, New York. Tell them they are misleading the world.
May I suggest that you counsel the parents of patients who die during circumcision.
May I suggest that you counsel the parents of patients who died after circumcision.
May I suggest that you counsel the parents of patients who never came out of anaesthesia.
May I suggest you deal with the complications of surgery and circumcision.

A naturally large and healthy penis is penis with a foreskin. A circumcised penis is smaller, less sensitve, less satisfying to both the man and the woman because the glans is keratinised.

If the creator wanted to give mankind a penis without a foreskin he would have done that. If not, we would have evolved to have penis without a foreskin. Maybe, at least, god would have given us foreskins without blood vessels, without nerves and without living cells. Then we could circumcise the penis.

Please be informed that I am not a medical practitioner and I request that you not represent me as such. If you are a medical practitoner, I am sad to say, you are ill informed.

It is disappointing to hear a medical practitioner talk of the good of circumcision. I firmly disagree with you. It may be a good idea for you to read the Journal of Psychiatry, Journal of Pediatric Medicine, and the reports from the World Health Organization.

There has been enough misinformation without educated people like yourself misleading the ill informed.

Shergill,

Your article is right. I have a set of twins. They are grown up but are seeing psychiatrists for their circumcision problems. I am sorry about this but my husband and I did not give them a chance to decide.

The surgeon cut off all the sensitive tissues. They are left with erectile non-sensitive male organs. Children should not be circumcised.

God article Shergill. I've never heard a single convincing arguement for infant circumcision. Let's leave well alone - needless surgical intervention is a nonsense, glad my parents never went down that path.

Good Day Rask Balavoine,

Thank You for reading and commenting on my article. Did you read John's outburst of raw anger? If not please take the time to read it. It is in this section, just above my comments. He believes that just because a publication by Wiley publications talks of advantages then it is good to have a circumcision. He chose to ignore the World Health Organization.

Now he has chosen not to respond to my response to his comments.

Thank You once again.

Is there any study of adults in different cultures reporting changes in sexual enjoyment due to sensitivity loss, incidents of infection risks etc in males who were circumcised as adults?

I know only about this survey

http://www.cirp.org/library/sex_function/fink1/

Most of the religious strictures are usually contextual. It is curious that people are willing to change some of these, while others are followed blindly even if the circumstances have changed drastically.

Shergill, your writing must've touched an intact nerve ending, so you get flames. I guess, that as an educator you're used to it. Goes with the job!

Good Day Rana,

There is not a single scientifically supported benefit of circumcision yet this ancient ritual continues. I am planning on documenting all the research: the good, the bad and the ugly with a view to giving a balanced perspective. Right now it is marking time so time is limited. I will publish my research in a scientific journal.

There is only one study which says that there is an advantage to be circumcised if you are in an AIDs infested area and intend to have sex with an AIDS positive person. Even that study does not recommend routine circumcisions.

Yes, you are right (please allow me to change your words, just a little bit) I must have circumcised someone's thought processes. Now they will know how much it hurts when one is held down and the penis cut off.

I have published a complete answer to some of those unfounded justifications. There has been one positive response. So far so good.

Seems like I am read more than I thought I was. Some readers love me others hate me. Some readers actually hate me because I have identified myself as being liberal. I am proud that I am being recognised as such.

Bye for now.

I have read all of the opinion's and I must say if I am researching about circumcisions is because my son was circumcised. My son is 10 yr's old and I have noticed that his penis is extremely small. I am very worried about my son and I wanted some answers as to why he was not developing properly. Now that I have read this article I have come to the conclusion that I made a horrible mistake a mistake that will forever be with my son. Please if you are thinking of having this procedure done I suggest you say no. I would like to thank you for you're article it is filled with all of the information that a parent or adult would need to know before ever considering such a procedure. If you have any more information about this please let me know.
Thank You, Rosie Torres

Good Day Rosie,

At ten years of age your child is still young. The penis will begin to get larger and develop more as his gonads develop.

My view is that we do alot of things which we believe to be true. I honestly believe you did what you felt was best for your son. You are not the only person to have learned the truth the difficult way.

Since this has already happened I do not know of anything which you could do to reverse the procedure. I do wish that you get your son professional, age appropriate counselling. I cannot tell where you live but make sure you go to a professional counsellor.

Since your son is still young he may be entitled medicaid payments.

Last but not least, the World Health Organization has done a lot of research on circumcisions. The WHO concluded that there were no benefits to circumcision and the WHO is actively discouraging male infant circumcision.

Thank You for taking a stand against genital mutilation. Thank You for having the courage and wisdom to question your own decisions. It takes a lot of inner strength to do the soul searching you have done.
